This paper aims to reveal the current state and characteristics of Korean newspapers’ practices of news coverage of Asia by employing a content analysis of two representative Korean newspapers, Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh. In the context of rapid globalization in which information and knowledge of Asian countries becomes more important for the mutual and deep understanding of Asian societies, international news coverage of Asia is expected to play a significant role. This paper analyses total 226 news reports for six weeks which are sampled between May and October in 2007 by focusing on the eight aspects of news coverage: the volume of news coverage by region and by country, the page placement of Asian news, writer, topic, type of report, source, and news value. According to findings, the volume of news coverage on Asia by region has increased significantly compared to five years ago. It is also the case for the news coverage by country. Within Asian countries, however, the two countries China and Japan disproportionately account for 60% of total news reports on Asia even though we consider the two countries influential both on Korea and on the rest world. In addition, Asian news becomes placed more often in the first page than it did five years ago. One of the significant change turns out to be the increase of news reports written by their own foreign correspondents in contrast news coverage relying on international news wires drops sharply. It means that Korean newspapers are allowed to put their own point of views in reporting practices. These findings suggest that the changes happening in Korean news coverage of Asia be assessed positively, which can lead to expand Koreans" understandings and interest in Asia.
