This study was purposed to explore the factors influencing the depression level of the elderly living alone. This study especially focused on the relationship between economic status and the depression level of the elderly living alone. For this, this study used the first year data came from "Korean Welfare Penal Research" that covered over 6,000 household over the country. For the purpose of the study, total 838 elderly living alone were selected as sample and descriptive and blocked(or hierarchical) regression methods were used. The main findings were as follow. First, the elderly living alone showed such characteristics as low education, high health problems, low economic status and high depression level. Second, looking at the results in bi-variate analyses, education. housing. health status, chronic disease. disability, level of living arrangement, working ability, financial strain, family support were related to the depression level of the elderly living alone. Finally, multi-variate analysis showed that economic status, in addition to health status and social support, were played the greatest role in explaining the depression level of the elderly living alone. That is, as the elderly get higher working ability, lower level of financial strain, higher economic status, better health status, and stronger family support, they tended to experience lower level of depression. Based on the results, several policy and empirical implication were suggested.
