This study analyzes the effect of the quality of paid work and unpaid housework performed by Korean adult men and women on their depression. 1,732 respondents from the ‘Korean Health Inequality Survey’ collected in 2011 by the Korean Gallup are the subjects of analysis. Major findings are as follows. First, paid workers than unpaid houseworkers regard their work quality(pleasure, new learning opportunities, creativity, unmonotonousness) as much better, the tendency prominent regardless of gender. Secondly, regression analysis shows that women are affected only by the work quality whereas men are affected by both the quality and the type of work. If the qualities of two work types are same, the depression level of a female houseworker is not lower than that of a female paid worker. Thirdly, the effect of work quality on depression is verified among all work types. However, the interaction effect of work quality and gender is found only in unpaid housework. The effect of good housework quality reducing depression is stronger among women than men. Finally, economic level and marriage dissolution, gender role attitude likewise have an effect on depression. Attitude toward housework sharing among couples results in depression reduction among men while it increases depression among women, revealing that the direction of the effect diverges according to gender.
