This study explored how smart phone usage experience affects the relationships between intension to use tablet PCs and factors that affect the intension. The study built a research model with functional qualities, social image, and perceived playfulness as attitudes and/or beliefs toward tablet PCs that affect intension to use tablet PCs, and innovativeness and polychronicity as personality characteristics affecting the three tablet PC attitudes and/or beliefs. A total of 961 potential tablet PC users participated in an online survey, and the data was analyzed with structural equation modeling. Path analysis and multiple group analysis were performed. Results showed, first, that the effect of innovativeness was greater than that of polychronicity on respondents’ perceptions about functional qualities, social image, and playfulness of tablet PCs. Polychronicity affected functional qualities and social image, but not playfulness. Secondly, smart phone users were higher in innovativeness than non-users, but did not differ in polychronicity from non-users. Smart phone users perceived higher social image and higher playfulness, but users’ perception about playfulness was not significantly greater than non-users’ perceived playfulness. Smart phone users were also greater in intension to use tablet PCs than non-users. Lastly, smart phone usage experience increased the effect of innovativeness on social image and playfulness perception. Polychronicity increased functional qualities and playfulness among smart phone users, but not among non-users. The effect of playfulness on intension to use tablet PCs was greater among non-users of smart phone than among users. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed along with limitations of the study.
