One of the most important steps in basic ship design is to get a good estimation of the resistance and propulsive performances of the ship under consideration. Furthermore, it is desirable to obtain the hull form of the minimum resistance and the best propulsive efficiency. For minimization of the total resistance, both a vow form redering the minimum wavemaking resistance and a stern form with the most uniform wake distribution, if possible, are more than required. Recently, as a mean of future transportation, super-high speed ships are given a great interest and whose resistance stems mainly from wavemaking. In the present research, a group of linear and nonlinear theories are used to analyze the flow phenomena around ships and the results are verified experimentally to find a reliable method of designing the hull form of the minimum wavemaking resistance. The effects of boundary layer and wake upon the free surface wave are also investigated to clarify the role of the viscosity in the wavemaking mechanisms. The existing linear theories are systematically studied and new models capable of accounting effects of nonlinearities and visconsities are estabilished. 1st part of project : Systemization and Experimental Varification of Linear Wavemaking Resistance Theories. The existing linear wavemaking resistance theories are studied. Panel methods including Hess & Smith and Dawson's XYZ methods are applied to the computations of wavemaking resistances and wave profiles of the Wigley and Series 60, C(sub)(B)=0.6 hull forms. Model tests for the hull forms are performed to verigy the results and it is concluded that higher order panel methods are desirable for designing stem forms of low-speed full ships. An Euler solver based on finite difference methods has been developed in the present study to demonstrated that it can be successfully applied to the simulation of flow fields around the stem of the Series 60, C(sub)(B)=0.6 hull forms. Three different stem forms are designed by exploiting the results of series tests and the optimum stem form which yield the minimum wave resistance is selected by the numerical simulations. Model tests show apparent reductions in wavemaking resistance of the selected hull form, in confirmations of the ability of the present methods. 2nd part of project: Calculation of nonlinear wavemaking resistance of ships Ships are divided into three groups, namely low, medium and high speed ships, according to their types and speeds, then a proper theory for each group was pursued and a practical numerical code has been developed. For the medium speed ships, the Neumann-Kelvin theory has been applied and accordingly an effective algorithm for computing Havelock sources and Havelock integrals were developed. Furthermore, it is shown that the common belief that the Dawson's free surface boundary condition was derived based upon the same concept as the Ogilvie's is false, and that the more proper way of understanding shy the Dawson method works is attained by looking at his method from the purely numerical not perturbation point of view. For highspeed ships, first it was confirmed that there is no existing second order theory which are practically useful enough to be implemented in a numerical code for naval arcitects, thus a new free surface boundary condition was derived which was applied to two-dimensional problems to prove its accuracy and practicability. In deriving this an exact theory for two-dimensional submerged bodies was selected as a comparing refernce, and the improvement over the classical Poisson condition was targeted to get a higher order approximation. 3rd part of project : Viscous Effects upon the Wavemaking Resistance of ships. The viscous effects on the wavemaking resistance were studied. Thin boundary layer theory integral type has been developed to calculate the boundary layer characteristics including boundary layer and wake. Higher order theory was applied to obtain a stable solution around the ship hull. Viscous effects on the Wavemaking resistance were investigated through viscous methods. First, wave resistance coefficients of a thickened body were computed by thin ship theory. Next, the effect of viscosity on the free surface flows is studied by considering the head loss on the free surface. Finite difference schemes of Dawson type were applied to satisfy the radiation condition including the head loss on the free surface. Pressures on the hull surface were integrated to obtain the pressure resistance of a ship. Numerical computations are performed for the Wigley hull form. From the computed results, the first method shows good qualitative agreement. It is also found that the second method shows reasonable comparisons as well.
