The northwestern part of the Cretaceous Kyongsang Basin comprises alluvial deposits of gravelstone, gravelly sandstone, sandstone and mudstone which can be grouped into four allostratigraphic units based on stratigraphic discontinuities trending NW-SE (erosional or nonerosional). There are pronounced changes in the architecture of channels fills together with sandstone/mudstone ratio across the boundaries. Gravelostone lithologic units of the allostratigraphic units consist of thick debris flow and/or sheetflood deposits whose clast compositions differ from one another, suggesting local sources. Sedimentary facies and architectural analyses reveal that each sequence forms a depositional system consisting of alluvial fans to the north and fluvial channel networks draining toward the southeast. Channel fills of sequence 1 are characterized by stacked sandstone beds (multistorey) which are orgainzed into several packages of lateral/vertical accretions separated by impersistent scoured surfaces of fine sandy layers. They are interpreted as migratory sinuous channel deposits. Channel fills of sequence 2 are single-storey units encased by purplish mudstone beds and are bounded by erosive, stepped base and flat, diffuse top. They consist of cross-stratified lower part and amalgamated, horizontally stratified, upper part. Thin sandstone beds of crevasse splay are common in purplish mudstone. Fluvial chammels of sequence 2 represent shallow, ephemeral, low-sinuosity channel network developed on aggrading floodplain. In sequence 3, sandbodies consist of repetitive fining upward units : lower disorganized or crudely stratified gravelstone wedge and the overlying stratified sandstone beds. Disorganized, clast-supported gravel layers filling the scoured hollows are overlain by stratified coarse sandstone layers. Diverse directions of cross-stratification and poorly-type channel on floodplain. Channel fills of sequence 4 are moderately to well sorted sandstone and alternate with purplish mudstone and olive gray mudstone beds. The sandstone beds are laterally accreted, showing onlap or downlap patterns. Packages of these beds are separated by fine organization of the sandstone beds is indicative of meandering channel system. Calcareous nodules are common within purplish mudstone. Four depositional sequences successively shift toward the east, stratigraphically upsection. Such sequence development is nearly perpendicular to the direction of overall sediment dispersal in each sequence. The four sequences can be organized into two fining upward megacycles : lower megacycle of sequences 1 and 2, upper one of sequences 3 and 4. The boundary between sequences 1 and 2, is gradational and sandstone/mudstone ratio of sequence 1 is larger than that of sequence 2. The boundary between sequences 2 and 3 is characterized by an abrupt emplacement of gravelstone layers scoured into the uppermost purplish mudstone bed of sequence 2, terminating the lower megacycle. Sequences 3 and 4 are separated by persistent dark mudstone beds and also form a fining upward cycle in terms of mean grain size and sandstone/mudstone ratio. In this study, the overall changes in styles of channel fills (architectures) as well as sandstone/mudstone ratio across the sequence boundaries are probably related to the changes in accommodation potential of alluvial basin. Baselevel change seems to have played a monor role on accommodation in upstream depositional environments comprising alluvial fan and associated fluvial channel networks. The two fining upward megacycles were probably developed by tectonic subsidence/uplift shifting (north)eastwards. Internal organization of each sequence seems to be controlled by sediment supply and discharge pattern.
