Due to recent advances in nanoscale fabrication andlow-temperature techniques, single charge tunneling problem has been a new area oflow-temperature solid state physics. In appropriately designed nanoscale devices thetunneling of a single charge across a tunneling barrier can seriously affect themacroscopic state of the system. Furthermore, because of the so-called Coulombblockade, the microscopic tunneling transitions may be controlled by means ofmacroscopic applied voltages such as bias or gate voltages. These devices are, inparticular, potentially useful for metrological applications such as fundumental standardsof dc current and for digital devices. The most remarkable candidates for suchstandards are the single electron turnstile, where a gate electrode controlled by an rfsignal is capacitively coupled to the center of the array, and the single electron pump, where two gate electrodes controlled by two rf signals are capacitively coupled to theelectrodes inside the array. However, it is known that charge fluctuations give rise tosmall deviation from the controlled de current flowing through these devices. Thus forpossible metrological applications of these devices, it is essential to know the error rateof the operation, which depends on how frequent and by what processes the electronstransit the device in the presence of Coulomb barrier. To investigate the barrierconfinement, many authors have studied a special device structurally similar to theturnstile and pump, the single electron trap, where the end of the array is connected toa well capacitor, rather than the turnstile and pump.In our study, we reviewed recent theoretical work on an analytical approach to thecharge dynamics of electron tunneling in single electron devices consisting of longarrays with equal stray capacitances and equal junction capacitances. Our approach tothe problem has two basic steps. First, we found the exact solution for the potentialprofiles and the associated Gibbs free energy, based on a technique for diagonalizing aparticular type of a tridiagonal matrix equation.Second, we studied the change of the Gibbs free energy arising from single chargetransfer. The method has been applied to one-dimensional long arrays, single electrontraps, and single electron turnstiles, and the results were compared with that of theexisting experiments. In addition, we investigated the dependence of the Coulombblockade region of the 2N-turnstile and the 3N-pump on the number of the junction andthe ratio of the junction capacitance and gate capacitance.
