Sound absorption is known to be affected by structural factors of the material such as porosity, pore size, tortuosity of the pore, the content of the open cell, areal fraction of the pore in the surface, bulk modules and loss factor, and so on and the thickness of the porous layer. Since those factors are dependent each other, sound absorption characteristics are generally described by lumped parameters such as flow resistance, structure factor, etc. Sound absorption characteristics of various porous materials were analyzed in this study. In this study, sound absorption properties of commercial porous materials(glass wool and PU foam) and the material(PVOH foam and PS foam) synthesized in the laboratory were analyzed through the above-mentioned factors. In addition, the change in the sound absorption by the water absorption was also evaluated. The porous materials with open and interconnected pore showed much better sound absorption property than the materials with closed cell, as expected. As the thickness of the porous layer and the air cavity behind the porous layer increased, sound absorption was increased. Optimum pore size could not be determined independent of the other factors because the optimum flow resistance was dependent upon the pore size, the porosity and the thickness of the porous layer. However, the pore size was determined from the typical flow resistance of commercial sound absorbing materials such as a PVOH foam. PVOH foam synthesized in the laboratory showed excellent sound absorption property in the frequency range above 1.0kHz when the foam had the density of 0.05-0.08g/㎤. PVOH foam also showed excellent mechanical properties such as compressive strength and impact strength. Due to those excellent mechanical and acoustical properties, PVOH foam is expected to be used for the structural sound absorbing material. Even though PVOH foam is good water absorbing material, its sound absorbing capability is retained in the wet state upton the water content of 130%, which is expected to be used in the humid condition as a sound absorbing material.
