Since accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now regarded as one of the major reasons of the Global Warming, interest in the reutilization of carbon dioxide is on the increase. About one third of the total CO₂ evolution comes from power generation facilities, steel industries, cement producing facilities, steel industries, cement producing factories, and pertrochemical industries, with a considerably concentrayed state. Therefore, afterconcentration and/or separation of the CO₂ from other gases, such CO₂ should be efficiently converted to valuable compounds. It is desirable for the reutilization of carbon dioxide to develop the technology for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to valuable materials such as methanol, or hydrocarbons. The carbon dioxide reforming with methane into synthesis gas have been also greatly interested as promising ways of CO₂ recycling chemistry due to their commercial availability and large treating capability. The hydrogenation of CO₂has been studied over Fe/alumina and Fe-K/alumina catalysts. The addition of potassium increases the chemisorption ability of CO₂ but decreases that of H₂ and enhances the interaction between the surface-carbon species and the catalyst surface. The catalytic activity test at high pressure (20 atm) reveals that remarkably high pressure (20 atm) reveals that remarkably high activity and selectivity toward light olefins and C/SUB 2+/ hydrocarbons can be achieved with Fe-K/ alumina catalysts containing K of high content (K/Fe molar ratio = 0.5, 1.0). In the reaction at atmospheric pressure, the highly K-promoted catalysts give much higher CO formation than unprompted catalyst. It seems that the enhanced activity for reverse water gas shift reaction favors C/SUB 2+/ hydrocarbon formation at the elevated pressure. It is deduced that the remarkable catalytic properties in the presence of K are attributed to the increase in the surface basicity and the bonding strength of carbon to iron. Besides, various coprecitated catalysts based on iron were also examined for the hydrocaron synthesis from CO₂, and Fe-Zn catalysts were found to be excellent. The Fe-Zn catalyst shows high activity and selectivity for the formation of light olefins and liquid hydrocarbons only when they have a spinnel structure. On the other hand, catalytic fixation of carbon dioxide was also tried through the catalytic reduction with methane in order to convert into useful chemicals such as synthesis gas in the 1st stage (1992 - 1995) of this study. The CO₂ reforming of methane to synthesis gas was performed over Ni catalysts supported on pentasil-type zeolite having favorable characteristics of CO₂adsorption and high surface area mixed with alumina as a support. High activity with high resistance to coke in the catalysts was confirmed by obtaining near equilibrium conversions of CO₂ and methane as well as near equilibrium yields on CO and H₂ for over 140 hours of reaction. It was shown that the incorporation of metallic components into zeolites via solid-state reaction method, so-called molten salt technique, exhibited excellent performance in the CO₂-reforming reaction. Coke deposition on the catalysts for the CO₂-reforming reaction was also affected by reaction conditions and catalyst composition such as the reactant ratio of CO₂ and CH₄, and the Ni loading. Coke deposition on the catalysts for the CO₂ -reforming reaction was remarkablely diminished with the addition of alkaline promoters such as K and Ca oxides. This was attributed to the formation of carbolate species, mainly monodentate carbonate, on Ca promoters located adjacent to Ni sites and to the dissociative adsorption of CO₂ on Ni surface by the addition of alkaline promoters. It appeared that the supply of surface oxygen from these adsorption was helpful in preventing the build-up surface carbon during the reaction. In addition, from the mechanistic study the presence of carbonate species due to mainly Ca promoter was confirmed on KNiCa/ZSI catalyst. These species could easily transfer to adjacent nickel surface via the CO₂ chemisorption under reaction conditions. It was also found that the dissociative adsorption of CO₂ on Ni surface into CO and surface oxygen and the removal of surface carbon by adsorbed oxygen was considerably promoted by the addition of alkaline promoters. The chemisorbed amount of CO₂ on the catalyst increased with the addition of alkaline promoters. These appeared to be closely related to the catalyst stability, namely coke resistance. Based on spectroscopic results, a plausible reaction scheme could be suggested. In the reaction scheme, the coexistence of Ni and NiO would be possible. It deemed that both metallic Ni and NiO on supported Ni catalysts where coexisted were concerned in the CO₂ reforming of methane. And also the population of metallic Ni and NiO on the surface of supported Ni catalysts was considered to be important in the catalyst activity and stability. Particularly, CO₂ gasification step of surface carbon on Ni sites which is called, in other words, as reverse Bodyguard reaction was important to obtain highly stable activity in the reaction scheme. In addition, it was suggested ways of manufacturing syngas with different ratios (H₂/CO = 0.3 - 1.5) from the mixed reforming of methane. Therefore, in the 2nd-stage (1995 - 1998) of this study, several trials will be performed for the alleviation of chemical equilibrium limit in the CO₂ reforming to produce synthesis gas, because high temperature needs to obtain high catalytic activity and yields of synthesis gas.
