For recent 10 years, cellulase enzymes have been used in cotton garment wet processing to improve the handle and surface appearance of cotton. Exploring more proper use of cellulase enzyme can be an answer to the desire for a cleaner and less polluting textile technology. In this study, cellulase treatment of cotton fabrics was investigated using six different fabrics including Ne=40 and 60 single jersey knits(mercerized and nonmercerized respectively) and Ne=10 and 20 3/1 twill denims :i) to obtain a guide for adjusting the enzyme concentration and treatment to give a proper weight loss to cotton fabric.ii) to see the effects of mercerization, yarn sizes and fabric structure such as knitted versus woven type on weight loss, iii) to evaluate the effect of pre-existing dyes and DMDHEU, andiv) to find out improved fabric properties as well as unfavorable strength reduction depending on the type of fabric. There was a proportional relationship between weight loss and enzyme concentration, as well as weight loss and treatment time. Weight loss increased in an additive way as enzyme concentration or treatment time increased in a way of multiplication. Correlation between enzyme concentration and treatment time to give a 4-5% weight loss of Ne=10 3/1 denim fabric was found to be that the former parameter increased two times as the latter decreased by half. However, this relationship could not be generalized for other weight loss values nor other type of fabric. It was generalIy observed that the first 20-30 minute of treatment gave the similar weight loss regardless of the fabric type and enzyme concentration. Fabric weight loss by cellulase treatment of cotton was found to be dependent on mercerization, yarn sizes and fabric structure. Weight loss decreased in the order of Ne=60 mercerized > Ne=60 nonmercerized $\approx$ Ne=40 mercerized > Ne=40 nonmercerized knit fabrics, indicating increased enzymatic hydrolysis on mercerized cotton with smaller yarn size. Also a higher weight loss was observed for the knitted fabric compared with the woven fabric. These results are probably due to the easier accessibiliy of cellulase enzymes to i) larger surface area of equalIy weighed sample with smaller yarn size, ii) smooth circular cotton fiber resulting from a morphological change after mercerization, and iii) loose structure of knitted fabric compared with much denser and tighter woven fabric. Effect of pre-existing dyes on cellulase activity was examined by measuring the difference in weight reductions on cotton fabrics previously dyed with direct, reactive, and vat dyes. Dyes were chosen i) to compare the effect of three major dye classes for cotton, ii) to see the difference between monoreactive and bifunctioal reactive dyes and iii) to estimate molecular size effect of vat dyes. Results are summarized by listing the decreasing order of weight loss after cellulase treatment of the dyed cotton sepcimens :· for mercerized cotton knit, undyed > direct > monoreactive > vat > bifunctional.· for nonmercerized cotton knit, undyed > direct > vat > monoreactive > bifunctional. All of the seven dyes selected in this study were proven to inhibit the cellulase reaction and the degree of inhibition was dependent on the dye class. In contrast to the previous report that the indigo dye did not obstruct the enzyme reaction, the planar structure of vat dyes with larger molecular sizes seemed to play an important role to their inhibitory effect.Larger inhibitory effect of bifunctional dyes compared with monoreactive dyes was shown, implying that cross-linking property of bifunctional dyes is related to cellulase hydrolysis. This suggestion was further supported by observing only a small reduction in weight after cellulase treatment of DMDHEU-treated cotton fabric. A model was proposed to explain the slower progress of enzymatic cleavage on cross-linked cellulose fibers. The most noticeable benefit after cellulase treatment was found to be a pill prevention resulting from the removal of surface fibriIs. For knitted fabrics, weight loss of about 1-2% was enough for a remarkable reduction in pilling tendency while woven fabrics showed no significant pilling reduction effect till a 8-9% weight loss. Retention of tearing strength after cellulase treatment increased in the order of Ne=40 and 60 nonmercerized < Ne=40 mercerized < Ne=60 mercerized, demonstrating that mercerization can relieve the strength loss problem. The limit of maximum weight loss to give a tolerable strength loss as garments was provided for the selected six fabrics in this study.
