The need for the lightweight and effective artificial muscle for rehabilitation is now being risen because the peoples who have some defects in the functions of muscles are increased recently as the industrialization of man's society and the average $pan of human's life is increased. Electoactive polymers (EAPs), which can change shape in response to electric stimulation, have attracted great attentions among engineers and scientists from many different disciplines. Ionomeric polymer-metal composites (IPMCs), a class of EAP, consists of a thin polymer membrane with metal electrodes plated on both faces. IPMCs are an active actuator, which shows a large, and quick-bending responsed by a Low voltage applied between electrodes through the membrane. Therefore IPMC ate a premising candidate as a miniaturized, lightweight, and flexible micro-actuator ill the field of biomimetic applications such as artificial muscle. Almost all the studies about IPMC have used commercially available perfluorinated ionomeric membrane such as Nafion of Dupont. However, most of commercially available Nafion have a typical thickness in the range of approximately 0.1∼0.3㎜ and it is not melt-processable. So, it is net easy to fabricate IPMC with appropriate shape for the best performance in practical application.
In the first subject of this research, we tried to get a new material which can replace Nafion in the application of IPMC, and which can be fabricated easily by melt-processing or casting, In the second subject of this research we designed and evaluated an actuation system with IPMC which can be used as a biomimetic artificial muscle.
In the first subject of this research, we designed, synthesized, and evaluated five Series of materials. The Series 1 is the copolymer(PFAA) of fluoroalkyl acrylate (FA), Zonyl TA-N of DuPont, and acrylic acid (AA). To the best knowledge of the present author, this is the first report on the IPMC of acrylic polymer, and can be utilized variously because it can be easily polymerized and cast from a solution with many degrees of freedom in molecular and shape design. The responses of the current and the displacement by applied voltage decreased after the first increase, as the content of AA ill the copolymer was increased. The best performance of IPMC was observed when the AA content was 10.6 wt.%, This shows that the large water uptake accompanied by high ionic site content caused adverse effect in the actuation by electric stimulus. In the Series 2, the copolymer (PFMAA) of fluoroalkyl methacylate, Zonyl TM of DuPont and AA, which can be compression molded, was prepared and evaluated. The actuation by applied voltage increased according to the ordo. $(CH_3)_4N^{+}by the kind of counter-cation. The IPMC prepared tv the membrane with 0.17 ㎜ thickness showed better actuation compared the IPMC prepared with thicker of thicker membranes. The nano-composites of PFMAA intercalated with sodium montmorillonite was prepared in Series 3 to increase the ionic concentration in IPMC and mechanical properties.
