(Hancrania brevilimbata)

This project deals mainly with the biofacies and evolutionary trends of the early
Paleozoic trilobites and tabulate corals, and sedimentological analysis of the Joseon
Supergroup in the Taebaeksan Basin. Based on these studies, it is attempted to
reconstruct the paleogeographic continental configuration of the Korean peninsula
and adjacent areas.
1) Trilobite studies have mainly focused on the Upper Cambrian trilobites of the
Yeongwol Group, and include the systematic description of new trilobite faunas
(Fatocephalus, Lejopyge armata, and Upper Cambrian agnostoid trilobites) and
their paleogeographic significance, biostratigraphy, evolution, and ontogentic
development. In addition, Korean Ordovician stylophoran echinoderms were morphometrically compared with those of Europe and North Africa.
2) Various modes of increase, known from both cnidarians and poriferans, are
recognized in some early tabulate corals including Saffordophyllum, Trabeculites,
Manipora, and Catenipora species occurring in the Late Ordovician. Lateral
increase, considered to be typical of corals, appears to be a normal mode of
increase in all these species. The similarities in modes of increase and other
paleobiologic attributes in these species suggest a close phylogenetic relationship
among them, despite the differences in wall microstructure and mural pores. The
relationship of these taxa to other tabulate corals remains unresolved, due to the
critical need for detailed paleobiologic studies of other early tabulates.
3) The sedimentological approaches first attempted to synthesize the tectonic
setting and basin evolution of the Korean peninsula during the Phanerozoic times.
In the study, we proposed the South Korean Tectonic Line (SKTL) for the suture
zone between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze blocks in the early Mesozoic. The
limestone conglomerates in the Joseon Supergroup are emphasized to have been
formed predominantly by autoconglomeration. The Ordovician sponge bioherms
from the Dumugol Formation are described for the first time in Korea.
This research project generated a total of 15 papers including eleven paleontological and four sedimetological articles. Of these, thirteen were published in the international (SCI) journals, while two in the domestic ones.
These results will significantly contribute to improve future studies on
systematics, paleoecology, paleogeography, and evolution of the invertebrate fossils
and to understand the tectonic and sedimentary basin evolution of the Korean
peninsula in the Phanerozoic times.
