To develope a theory for Stress Unit (SU) as a parameter to quantify the magnitude of environmental stress comprising both intensity and duration components of stress. As a model system, salt stress of hydroponically-cultivated rice plants were selected. Various magnitude of salt stresses were induced by combining different levels of salinity and salt stress duration and subsequent growth reductions were analysed by using Salt Stress Unit (SSU), which was calculated by integrating salinity over the time of stress duration. All the growth parameters such as shoot and root dry weight, plant height, number of tillers and leaf numbers exhibited linear reduction in proportion to SSU. Such relationship between SSU and relative growth reduction could be found in both steady and fluctuating salinity conditions, indicating the practicality of using SSU as a quantitative parameter to measure the magnitude of salt stress in dealing with salt-affected growth reduction of rice plants. The slope of linear regression equation relating SSU and growth reduction could be used in quantitatively comparing salt stress sensitivities between growth stages, cultivars, crops, growth parameters. Physiological parameters such as photosynthesis rate or enzyme activity, however, showed no relationship with SSU. In conclusion, it is very likely that the magnitude of salt stress may be quantitatively expressed by integrating salinity over the time of stress to which rice plants are exposed, and salt-affected growth reduction can be quantitatively analysed and compared by using SSU. These results may be practically used to compare the salt stress tolerance among varieties, growth stages, and growth parameters of various crops in breeding researches. Also, relative impacts as well interactive effects of different kinds of environmental stresses could be handled quantitatively when stress units are applied in dealing each separate environmental stresses. Also, this Stress Unit may play an important role in separating stress intensity-dependent responses from stress duration-dependent responses of various stresses.
