The microfabrication technology in electronics have led to the development of integrated microfluidic devices, so-called "lab-on-a-chip" or a "micro-total analysis system" ($\mu$-TAS) In an ideal lab-on-a-chip system, all necessary analysis steps, such as sample pretreatment, chemical/biological modification, separation, and detection, are successively and automatically carried out in a highly integrated monolithic microchip device. Lab-on-a-chip systems have the potential to be of great importance in genetic analysis, clinical diagnostics, drug screening, and environmental monitoring. The advantages of lab-on-a-chip systems over traditional analytical devices can be summarized as follows: 1. Reduced consumption of samples, reagents, and mobile phases. 2. Improved analytical performance in terms of resolution power per time unit. 3. Multifunctional, interconnected channels networks with negligible dead volumes. 4. Fabrication of arrays of many parallel systems.5. Increased mechanical stability due to monolithic integration. 6. Suitability for inexpensive mass production. 7. Portability that allows in situ and real time analysis. 8. Disposability. With the introduction of capillary electrophoresis (CE) systems in etched microchannels in glass microchips in the early 1990s, lab-on-a-chip systems have received ever increasing interest over the past decade. CE is ideally suited to application in planar lab-on-a-chip systems because it is simple to fabricate microchannels for CE operation, and microfluidics for sample transport, injection and separation can be easily controlled by electric fields.
