1. $\underline{1st\;year}$: A transmission electron micorscopy is a very powerful analysis equipment in the analysis of microstructure of materials. Because transmission of electron is too hard due to dispersion of electron, a TEM specimen must be thin for electron to transmit it. Therefore, in this research, we develop the technique of TEM specimen preparation like the following.
a. Development of technique preparing cross-section TEM specimen of $WSi_2$/Si, of which TEM specimen preparation is very difficult due to large difference of milling rate.
(1) We develop the technique of TEM specimen preparation of multi-layered semiconducting materials containing Pt, $WSi_2$, etc. on Si substrate, of which milling is very hard as compared with Si substrate so a specimen preparation is very difficult.
(2) We develop the technique of TEM specimen preparation of multi-layered semiconducting materials containing CaN etc. CaN is very fragile and its milling rate is very different as compared with sapphire substrate so a specimen preparation is very difficult, however CaN is widely studied as optical device.
b. Improvement and optimization of conventional TEM specimen preparing technique of multi-layered materials
c. Development of new TEM specimen preparation technique using only mechanical polishing
d. Cofirmation of whether it is achieved or not that a difference of thickness is below 20%. In this case we assume that a thickness of substrate is 10 nm.
e. TEM observation to verify that prepared specimen is very thin and has no defect
and damage.
2. $\underline{2nd\;year}$: Analysis technique of high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) is core of TEM analysis technique and from this technique we are able to analyze microstructure of materials containing interface, structure, and defect as atomic scale. In HRTEM analysis technique, to observe atomic arrangement of materials having small atomic distance, improvement of resolution of TEM is necessary. In this research, we establish the HRTEM analysis technique to observe atomic arrangement of materials having atomic distance of 0.17 nm. To develop HRTEM imaging technique, we use following strategy and method.
a. Using the existing transmission electron microscopy with the minimum of the additional investment, we develop the technique with which the atomic distance less than 0.21 nm, the resolution of TEM, can be observed.
b. The technique of specimen preparation that is the results in the first year is used in maximum.
c. The factors that obstruct the resolution of TEM is minimized.
d. The TEM imaging technique that is optimum to the atomic distance to observe is
developed.
e. The adjustment of defocus is used in order to develop the optimum TEM technique.
f. We observe the high resolution transmission electron microscopy images of the materials which have the atomic distance(0.17 nm) less than the resolution of TEM(0.21 nm), and confirm whether we develop the technique.
3. $\underline{3rd\;year}$: In the TEM analysis techniques, high-resolution TEM(HRTEM) method is a core technique which can analyze a microstructure containing material structure, interface, and defect as an atomic scale. Ceramic and semiconductor materials have complicated structures and their atomic distance is very small, so in order to research atomic arrangements using a high-resolution experiment, it is necessary to minimize a resolution. In this research, to develop a high-resolution analysis technique which is a requirement for the observation of 0.16 nm atomic distance and observe atomic arrangements, we use following strategies and methods.
a. The technique of a specimen preparation only using a mechanical polishing and the skill limiting polishing rate difference of hetero-structured materials that are the results in the first year are used in maximum.
b. Using the 200 kV TEM which is widespread in our country, we develop the technique to observe the atomic distance less than 0.21 nm with minimum of the additional investment.
c. The ceramic and semiconducting materials have complex structures, so in order to analyze atomic arrangements, it is necessary to improve the observation resolution than the existing materials. We develop the technique to analyze 0.16 nm atomic distance.
4. $\underline{4th\;year}$ If we use both the analysis technique with 0.16 nm resolution confirmed in a high-resolution experiment and an image simulation, it is possible to analyze the arrangement which is impossible through a microscope. To research the new materials with complex structures and the arrangements of stacking faults, twins, and interfaces, we use following methods and strategies.
a. We use both the analysis technique with 0.16 nm resolution confirmed from high-resolution TEM image skills and image simulation.
b. A high-resolution image is dependent on the do-focus, atomic potential, specimen thickness, chromatic aberration, spherical aberration, and convergent angle. So we develop the method to measure the acruiate value,
c. The analysis of the new material with complex crystal structures and complicated
defects such as stacking fault, twin, dislocation, and interface require a resolution less than 0.16 nm atomic distance. In this case, it is difficult to find atomic position exactly. So we develop the atomic analysis technique with the resolution less than 0.14 nm.
5. $\underline{5th\;year}$: In the case of using both the analysis technique with 0.16 nm resolution and image processing, the more improved research of atomic arrangement is possible through filtering the image saved in the CCD. In order to research the atomic arrangement of new materials with complex crystal structures and defects such as stacking fault, twin, dislocation, and interface, the following procedured are used.
a. Use both the atomic analysis technique with the resolution less than 0.16nm resulted from a high-resolution TEM imaging skill and the image processing.
b. To research the atomic arrangement of new materials with complex crystal structures and defects such as stacking fault, twin, dislocation, and interface, we develop the atomic analysis technique with the resolution less than 0.16 nm through the imge processing such as filtering.
