본 연구는 안전성 평가용 입력인자 생산, 수착특성 및 메커니즘 규명, 암반균열에서 핵종 이동 연구, 콜로이드 생성 및 이동 특성, 심지층 핵종 및 화학종 특성 규명 연구, 복합요소를 고려한 종합평가 등 6개의 분야로 나누어 수행되었다. 각 분야에 대한 연구내용과 범위는 다음과 같다.
1. 안전성 평가용 입력인자 생산
본 연구과제는 시스템형 대 과제인 고준위폐기물 처분기술개발의 일환으로 추진되어 왔으며 그 결과는 대과제 목표로 제시된 "심지층 처분개념 설정 및 안전성 평가 정립"에 직접 활용될 목적으로 수행되었다. 따라
본 연구는 안전성 평가용 입력인자 생산, 수착특성 및 메커니즘 규명, 암반균열에서 핵종 이동 연구, 콜로이드 생성 및 이동 특성, 심지층 핵종 및 화학종 특성 규명 연구, 복합요소를 고려한 종합평가 등 6개의 분야로 나누어 수행되었다. 각 분야에 대한 연구내용과 범위는 다음과 같다.
1. 안전성 평가용 입력인자 생산
본 연구과제는 시스템형 대 과제인 고준위폐기물 처분기술개발의 일환으로 추진되어 왔으며 그 결과는 대과제 목표로 제시된 "심지층 처분개념 설정 및 안전성 평가 정립"에 직접 활용될 목적으로 수행되었다. 따라서 처분장의 성능 평가 및 안전성 평가를 위한 핵종 관련 입력인자를 제공하는 것이 본 과제의 중요한 목적중의 하나이다. 따라서 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 다양한 실험적 연구들이 수행되었다. 안전성 평가용 압력인자를 제공하기 위해 생산된 핵종 관련 입력인자들 및 주요 연구 내용은 다음와 같다.
o 핵종 확산계수
- 국내산 화강암에 대한 비수착성 핵종(Eosine, Dl)과 수착성 핵종(U, Th, Eu)의 확산계수 측정
- 관통확산 모델 정립 및 조건변화에 따른 확산계수 변화 규명
o 핵종 수착계수
- 환원조건 유지를 위한 글로브 박스 설치 및 환원조건 시험
- 약한 환원 조건 및 강한 환원조건에서 국내 화강암과 광물에 대한 핵종수차계수 측정
- 연구소 부지내 시추공으로부터 채취한 화강암 및 지하수를 이용한 핵종 수착계수 측정
- 웹 기반 수착 데이터베이스 구축 및 국내 생산자료 입력
o 지화학반응 열역학 데이터
- 고준위 핵종들(Am, Th, U Np, Pu 등)에 대한 수용성 반응정보
- 악티나이드 침전물 형태 및 반응데이터
o 침전 및 용해도
- 국내 심부지하수에서 핵종(U, Am, Th, Np, Pu)들의 용해도 및 화학종 특성
- 지하수 조건 변화에 따른 악티나이드 핵종 용해도 민감도 분석(추가)
2. 수착특성 및 메커니즘 규명
국내산 화강암 시료의 광물 조성 및 고준위 핵종들의 수착 특성을 칼럼 및 회분석 방법 등을 이용하여 수행하였다. 아울러 다양한 실험 조건과 지화학적 변수들의 영향을 고찰하고 평형론적 및 속도론적 수착 메커니즘에 대한 연구 등을 수행함으로써 수착현상에 대한 다각적인 이해와 현상 규명을 통해 수착현상과 관련된 불확실성을 감소하고자 하였따. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다.
o 수착특성
- 분쇄 화강암 칼럼에서 U(VI) 이동 특성 규명
- 지화학 조건(pH, Eh, 탄산이온 농도 등) 변화에 따른 핵종별, 광물별 수착 특성 규명
o 물리, 전기화학적 변수 영향 분석
- 분쇄화강암 칼럼 및 회분식 실험을 통한 온도, 유량, pH, 탄산농도 영향 분석
o 암석조성 및 균열표면 특성 영향 규명
- 화학추출법 및 XRD를 이용한 화강암 구성광물의 우라늄 수착 영향 분석
- 본광학적 및 현미경학적 방법을 이용한 화강암 구성광물의 우라늄 수착 영향 분석
o 속도론적 및 평형론적 메커니즘 규명
- 국내 화강암 암석 조성 및 균열 표면 특성 분석
- 산화환경에서 화강암 표면 형태(분쇄입자, 모암표면, 균열표면 등)에 따른 핵종들(U, Th, Eu)의 수착계수 Kd 및 Ka 결정
- 지화학적 조건pH, 이온강도, 탄산염 농도 등)변화에 따른 속도론적 및 평형론적 수착 메커니즘 규명
- Ka 및 Kd의 상관관계 해석
3. 암반 균열에서 핵종 이동 연구
균열 암반을 통한 핵종이동 현상 해석을 위해 1m 규모의 국내상 자연 균열 암반을 이용한 다양한 핵종 이동 실험을 수행하였다. 먼저 균열 암반의 흐름 특성을 규명하기 위해 비수착성 핵종들을 사용하였고 이 후에 악틴족을 포함하는 수착성 핵종을 사용하여 이동 실험을 수행하고, 암반 공극으로의 확산 특성 및 Variable aperture channel model의 적용성 등을??험실적 해석으로부터 발생하는 불확실성을 규명하고 감소시키고자 노력하였다. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다.
o 1m 규모 국산 균열 화강암을 이용한 핵종 이동 실험
o 음이온 (Br-, Cl-)및 비수착성 핵종(THO, Eosine, Dye)을 이용한 지하수 흐름 특성 분석
o 수착성 핵종 (Sr$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Co, $^{2+}$, Cs$^+$, UO$^{2+}_2$, Th$^{4+}$, Eu$^{3+}$)이동 특성 분석
o 암반 공극 내로의 확산 영향 평가
4. 콜로이드 생성 및 이동 특성
나노 크기와 ppt 수준의 농도를 가진 콜로이드 입자들의 특성을 효과적으로 분석할 수 있는 최신의 기술인 Laster-Induced Breakdown Detection(LIBD)를 이용한 콜로이드 특성 분석 방법론을 개발하고 이를 이용하여 원자력연구소 부지내에서 채취한 지하수의 콜로이드 특성을 분석하였다. 아울러 처분장의 완충재로 사용되는 벤토나이트로부터 발생가능한 벤토나이트 콜로이드와 고준위 방사성 핵종과의 반응 특성을 다양한 지화학적 조건하에서 분석하였다. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다.
o Laser 기술을 이용한 자연콜로이드 특성(농도 및 크기) 분석 방법 개발
- Laser-Inducwed Breakdown Detection(LIBD)를 이용한 콜로이드 특성 분석 방법론 개발
- 연구소 부지 내 지하수 콜로이드 특성 분석
o 벤토나이트 콜로이드의 고준의 핵종과의 반응 특성 분석
- U(VI), Th(IV), Eu(III)과 벤토나이트 콜로이드의 반응 특성 분석 및 수착계수(또는 의사콜로이드 형성 상수) 결정
- pH, 이온강도 등 지화학적 변수 영향 규명
5. 심지층 핵종 화학종 특성 규명연구
심지층 처분조건 하에서 고준위 핵종들의 화학적 거동을 이해하기 위한 연구는 처분장 안전성 평가에 있어 가장 기초적인 분야라고 하겠다. 따라서 본 과제에서는 고준위 핵종의 지화학적 거동을 해석하기 위해 1단계에서 자체 개발한 MUGREM 코드의 성능 개선을 통해 분배계수 및 고농도 전해질 조건에서의 핵종 용해도를 분석하였다. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다.
o 지화학모델 적용 및 최적화를 통한 MUGREM 수정
- SPM 모델 적용
- SIT 모델 적용
o Pitzer Exquation 파라미트의 실험적 도출
- U, Eu, Th, Nd에 대한 Pitzer 방정식 파라미터의 실험적 측정
- 고농도 전해용액에서 활동도 계수 예측법 개발
o 산화/환원 조건 변화시 핵종거동 특성
- pH, Eh, 탄산농도 변화에 따른 U, Np, Pu의 흡착 분배계수 예측
6. 복합요소를 고려한 종합평가
실체 처분장은 10만년 이상의 장시간 동안 건전성을 유지해야 한다. 따라서 지화학적 조건 및 지하매질의 변화에 따른 장깆거인 핵종거동을 해것하는 것이 처분 안전성 평가의 불확실성 저감에 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하게 된다. 따라서 본 과제에서는 지하 광물의 용해/광물화와 같은 장기적인 현상이 핵종 이동에 미치는 영향을 다양한 방법으로 규명하고 지하수, 광물, 화학환경, 시간 등 복합요소를 고혀한 종합평가를 하고자 하였따. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다.
o 광물전이에 의한 핵종 흡착현상
o 암반의 용해 및 광물화에 따른 핵종거동 특성
- 자연매질의 용해 및 광물화에 대한 우라늄의 재분배 및 화학종 규명
- 지하수 화학, pH, Eh 등을 고려한 지화학적 해석
o 산화/환원 조건 하에서 용해/광물화 이동특성
- 자연매질에서 용해/광물화에 의한 우라늄의 이동현상 규명
- 자연에서 장기 효과를 고려한 지화학적 해석
o 복합요소를 고려한 종합평가
- 지하수, 광물, 화학환경, 시간을 고려한 실험 결과 종합 평가

This Project is composed of 6 sub. subjects; 1) data production required for safety assessments, 2) somtion properties and mechanisms, 3) nuclide migration in the fractured rock, 4) colloid formation and migration, 5) nuclide speciation in deep geological environments, and 6) total evaluation of geochemical behaviors considering multi- factors. The scopes of the 6 sub- subjects are as follows.
1. Data production required for safety assessments
o Distribution coefficient
- Glove-box installation and its test operation to maintain anoxic condition
- Measurement of distribution coefficient of nuclides on minerals/granite under weak and strong anoxic conditions
- Measurement of distribution coefficient of nuclides using a domestic granite and groundwater sampled from the KAERI site
- Development of web-based sorption database and extension of database by inclusion of domestically produced data
o Diffusion coefficients of nuclides
- Measurement of diffusion coefficients of nonsorbing tracers (Eosine, Cl ) and sorbing tracers (U, Th, Eu) for domestic granite
- Establishments of a through-diffusion model and computer program - Study on the diffusivity variation according to geochemical conditions
O Thermodynamic data of actinides
- Aqueous reaction constant of actinides, Am Th, U, Np, and Pu
- Dissolution/precipitation solubility product of actindes solids ' SIT interaction parameter
O Precipitation and solubility
- Speciation and solubility of U, Am, Np, and Pu in domestic deep groundwater conditions
- Sensitivity analysis of actinides solubility OTl groundwater composition
2. Sorption properties and mechanisms
A study on the mineralogical compositions and sorption properties of high-level radionuclides for domestic granite has been performed using batch and column methods. We Intended to reduce the uncertainties related with the sorption phenomena by understanding and characterizing the sorption phenomena. This intention was accomplished by the studies both on the effect of various geochemical parameters and experimental conditions and on the equilibrium and kinetic sorption mechanisms. The detailed scope and contents are as follows:
o Sorption properties
- characterization of uranium migration in a crushed granite column
- characterization of radionuclides sorption on various minerals according to geochemical conditions (pH, Eh, carbonate concentration etc.)
o Studies on the effects of physical and electrochemical parameters
- effects of temperature, flow rate, and pH on uranium migration by crushed granite column and batch experiments
o Studies on the effects of rock composition and fracture surfaces
- analysis on the contribution of constituent minerals of granite to the sorption of uranium by chemical extraction and XRD
- analysis on the contribution of constituent minerals of granite to the sorption of uranium by spectroscopic and microscopic methods
o Investigation on kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms
- investigation on the rock composition of domestic granite and the properties of fracture surfaces
- determination of distribution coefficients K$_d$ and K$_a$,/TEX> for radionuclides (U, Th, Eu) according to the surface types of granite in an oxic conditions
- analysis on the equilibrium and kinetic sorption mechanisms according to the variation of geochemical conditions (pH, ionic strength, carbonate concentration etc.)
- analysis on the relationship between K$_d$ and K$_a$,/TEX>
3. Nuclide migration In the fractured rock
Migration experiments of contaminates through a natural fracture of granite were carried out to understand contaminants transport in deep underground. The scale of rock fracture was 1m. In order to observe the migration characteristics, various kinds of tracers were used according to their chemical properties. Non-sorbing tracers were used for characterizing hydraulic properties as well as examining effects of matrix diffusion. While sorbing tracers were tested not only for the validation of the batch K$_d$ concept and the migration model, but also for minimizing uncertainties in the migration process. The study items are as follows:
o Migration experiments of nuclides through a natural fractured granite of 1 m scale.
o Hydraulic characterization in the flow field using anions (Br, Cl) and nonsorbing tracers (THO, Eosine, Dye)
o Migration properties of sorbing tracers(Sr$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Co, $^{2+}$, Cs$^+$, UO$^{2+}_2$, Th$^{4+}$, Eu$^{3+}$)
o Applicability of the variable aperture channel model
o Effect of diffusion of nuclides through the rock mass
4. Colloid formation and migration
We developed a methodology for characterizing colloidal particles using the LIBD (Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection), which is reCerltly developed and can analyze the properties of colloidal particles with nano-size and ppt level. We applied this method to the domestic groundwater colloids sampled from a borehole located within the region of Korea atomic Energy research Institute and analyzed the characteristics of the groundwater colloid. We also investigated the reaction properties of high-level radionuclides with a bentonite colloid which can be generated from a buffer material in various geochemical conditions. The detailed scopes and contents are as follows:
o Method development for analyzing the characteristics of natural colloids such as concentration and size using a laser technique
-development of methodology for characterizing colloidal particles using the LIBD(Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection)
- analysis on the groundwater colloids sampled from a borehole located within the region of Korea atomic Energy research Institute

6. Total evaluation of geochemical behaviors considering multi factors
The high-level radioactive waste repository should maintain the stability for long time over 10,000 years. An analysis on the long-term behaviors of radionuclides according to the variation of geochemical and geological conditions Plays an important role in reducing the uncertainties related with disposal safety assessments. Therefore, in this project, we investigated the effects of long-term phenomena such as dissolution and mineralization on the nuclide migration with various methods. Besides, we intend to totally evaluate the migration process by considering multi-factors such as groundwater, minerals, geochemical conditions, and time. The detailed contents are as follows:
o Nuclide sorption phenomena by mineral transformation
O Characteristics of nuclide behaviors according to rock dissolution and mineralization
- Uranium speciation and redistribution by dissolution and mineralization of natural geomedia
- Geochemical analysis considering groundwater chemistry, pH, and Eh
