The proclamation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in November 1994 and the Korea Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in August 1996 triggered urgent national demands for better definition and management of the marine territories of Korea, China, and Japan. Knowledge of marine mineral resources such as hydrocarbons, methane hydrate, phosphorite, and light and heavy minerals needs to be synthesized and advanced in preparation for the exhaustion of land-based resources. From 1997 to 2008, the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) investigated submarine mineral resources and geological structures in Korea’s marine territory. The results of these surveys have been compiled in the Marine Resources Information System (MRIS). The EEZ was divided into 12 zones for survey, and about 64% of the total area (218,141 $^{km}2$) was investigated, focusing on areas bordering Korea, China, and Japan. Geophysical investigation included 20,541 km of deep-sea seismic surveying, high-resolution shallow sub-bottom profiling, and gravimetric and magnetic surveys. Sediment cores were collected from 123 sites and rock samples were acquired from 4 sites using dredge. These data were used to reconstruct basin structure and stratigraphy, in order to assess hydrocarbon potential. Basin depth was determined by inversion of the gravity and magnetic data, and compared with the seismic data. Shallow sub-bottom profiles (3.5 kHz) and piston cores were used to investigate sedimentary structures and establish a sedimentary model tied to relative sea-level changes. Sand and heavy-mineral deposits were assessed by analyzing the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of sediment obtained by dredging and coring. A potential methane hydrate deposit was identified in the Ulleung Basin, south of Ulleungdo in the East Sea, a massive submarine coal deposit was discovered about 1000 m beneath the continental shelf near Pohang, and potential phosphorite deposits may be present near the northern part of Ulleungdo. Geological structures that could act as oil or gas reservoirs were discovered in the southern part of the South Sea, and other geological evidences with hydrocarbon and heavy-mineral potential were found in the middle part of the Yellow Sea.
