- Traditional oriental acupuncture is based on the proper stimulation of acupoints by metallic needles. Since the acupoints are typically located at a depth of 5~20mm from epidermis, a laser acupuncture in which the irradiation is made on skin cannot achieve the same treatment effects as the traditional acupuncture. To accomplish similar treatment effects, the laser acupuncture should be exercized in a manner that the laser directly irradiates acupoints underneath the epidermis.
- In this research, the manufacturing of a laser acupuncture system whose irradiation prameters can be adjusted for tonify and purge acupuncture treatment. Also, for the direct irradiation of acupoints by laser, needles in which an optical fiber is included in the core for laser tranmission is fabricated for invasive application.
- By using the developed laser acupuncture system, animal test has been conducted with mice to obtain the optimal laser parameter combinations for tonify and purge acupuncture methods. Also, safey evaluation has been carried out.
Ⅱ. Results
- A laser acupuncture system with the followjng specifications has been manufactured. (Wavelength: 655/532/808 nm, Emission mode: Continuous / Pulse, Repetition rate: 1~300 Hz, Maximum output power: 60 mW, Digital signal processing)
- Needles for invasive treatments have been fabricated by different methods including first by electroplating about 100um thick metal layer on an optical fiber, second by inserting an optical fiber into a closed stainless needle, and last by inserting and fixing an optical fiber into an open stainless tube of 300um in diameter.
- To investigate the effectiveness of invasive laser acupuncture, tonify and purge acupuncture treatments have been administered on mice with four different symptoms which include brain ischmia, hypertension, liver injury, and hyperlipidemia.
- From these animal studies, it was found that the traditional tonify acupuncture treatment matches the invasive red laser acupuncture, whereas the purge acupuncture treatment does the invasive green laser acupuncture.
- Specifically, the laser parameter combination for purge acupuncture treatment corresponds to 532nm green light, 10mW(20mW) power, 20Hz repetitin rate, pulse mode operation, whereas that for the tonify acupuncture treatment does to 658nm red light, 20mW power, 50Hz repetition rate, pulse mode operation.
- The acupoints on which purge acupuncture conditions can be applied include acupoints of purge the child phase, acupoints of purge the conquest phase, and acupoints of general purge, whereas those for tonify acupuncture conditions incluede acupoints of tonify the mother phase, acupoints of tonify the conquest phase, and acupoints of general tonify.
- For evaluation of the safety of invasive laser acupuncture, green laser acupuncture and red laser acupuncture administration have been conducted on mice at severe conditions of 25 mW and 50 Hz for 13 weeks with an administration frequency of twice a week. The mice in experiments showed no significant changes in biological indications, demonstrating the safety of invasive laser acupuncture.
III. Applications
- The system technology developed from this reseach will be transferred to industry for the development of commercial medical equipment, that is, an invasive laser acupuncture system with tonify and purge treatments.
- The system may be utilized to investigate the foundations of oriental-medicine based laser acupuncture. For this purpose, the developed system may be applied for clinical case study for the treatment of various symptoms, which will eventually lead to the scientification of oriental medicine.
