- Objective and Necessity of the Study ● Nuclear medicine imaging system which measures the temporal and spatial distribution of a certain radioisotope distributed at an interesting organ of the human body by injection or inhalation of a radiopharmaceutical has a nondestructive and noninvasive characteristic, and is a technique-intensive and high-value added device, which has widely used in the field of medical diagnostics of especially breast and heart diseases. So many efforts has been made by the advanced countries to improve its operating characteristics and to reduce its production cost. ● The technique and experience especially in the radiation detector in the country which is the core part of the nuclear medicine imaging is at a premature stage yet, and its fabrication technique is on a very low stage. So far domestic researches on the development of radiation detectors have been made with multiwire proportional counter of gas avalanche process and amorphous silicon pixel array of photo-conductivity, but not yet successfully developed from both cost and technical points of view. ● Electron multipliers, a new version of position-sensitive radiation detectors recently studied in Europe and the United States, have a simple geometric structure and thus are easy to be fabricated. Since their fabrication process uses the PCB(printed circuit board) technique, their production cost is much lower, compared with those of other types of radiation detectors. Thus, if we develop a commercial nuclear medicine imaging system based upon the low-cost electron multipliers early than abroad, it is easily possible to develop this item as an export-leading industry. ● The electron multiplier, placed in the drift volume of conventional gas detectors, is a conceptually simple device for producing a large gas gain by concentrating the drift electric field over a very short distance to the point that electron avalanching occurs, greatly increasing the number of drifting electrons. This device consists of a thin insulating foil of several tens of μm in thickness, covered on each side with a thin metal layer(Cu), with tiny holes, usually 100 μm or less in diameter, and with a spacing of 100-200 μm through the entire foil, perforated by using chemical etching or high-powered laser beam technique. In this study, we have investigated its operating properties with various experimental conditions, and demonstrated the possibility of using this device as a digital X-ray imaging sensor, by acquiring X-ray images based on the scintillation properties of the electron multiplier with a standard CCD camera. - Contents of the Study ● Development of a simulation code calculating electric field ● Analysis of the operating characteristics of the electron multiplier ● Optimal design and fabrication of the electron multiplier ● Experimental setup for testing the electron multiplier ● Tests of electron multiplier properties ● Construction of an imaging acquisition system ● X-ray image acquisition and image quality evaluation - Methods and Results of the Study ● Analysis of the electron multiplier and its fabrication : in order to study electrostatic characteristics of the electron multiplier we installed the MAXWELL code which is commercially available has been installed, and developed a program SHOWFIELD using the C++ programming language which draws electric field lines from the computed output of MAXWELL. We designed and fabricated electron multipliers based upon the simulation results : - Micro hole pitch : 100 μm - Micro hole diameter : 60 μm - Insulator (kapton) thickness : 50 μm - Metal (capper) electrode thickness : 1 μm ● Testing the Operating Characteristics : we installed a testing chamber, a gas-controlled line, an X-ray generator and signal process modules to test the operating characteristics of the electron multipliers fabricated with various operating conditions. The effective gas gain which is defined as the total electron number collected to the collection electrode per primary electron-ion pair produced by the incident radiation increased effectively with applied high voltages to the electron multiplier or with the number of electron multipliers used. ● Construction of an Imaging System and Image Acquisition : we developed an imaging system based upon the scintillation property of the electron multiplier using visible light optics and a standard CCD camera for the readout to acquire radiation images by measuring the incident position and intensity of the incident radiation. We used MegaPlus 1.4i camera of KAF 1400 CCD to detect effectively the visible and infrared lights generated from the electron multiplier. The digital image data acquired by the CCD camera were fed into a PC through the PIXCI image board, and processed by an image process S/W XCAPTM (EPIX Inc.) to evaluate the image quality. We acquired good X-ray images using an II-shaped plastic phantom which showed clear spatial contrast ● Future Study : in the future we need to develop fast multichannel readout circuit and two dimensional addressing technique for image process to improve the image quality further, instead of using the scintillation properties of the electron multiplier.
