Purpose& contents
This research aims at a successful development of a novel generic nano-continuum brdiging technology suitable for design of optimum microstructure by establishing structure-property relationship of functional nanomaterials such as nano thin film, nanowire, nanocomposites and nanocrystalline structures. Various approaches to identify the surface effect of nanofilms and nanowire, interphase effect in nanocomposites, and grain boundary effect of nanocrystalline structures via atomistic simulations have been proposed. As a generic technology to resolve accuracy and efficiency problem of microstructural design, unique multiscale bridging technologies that can describe the special nanoscale effect in continuum regime such as micromechanics, finite element, plate theory, hyperelasticity etc. for such microstructures have been developed.
Result
In this research, main research concerns are on the extraordinary surface effect and interphase effect of four representative microstructure of nano thin film, nanowire, nanocomposites, and nanocrystalline structures. For nano thin films and nanowire, we focused on the identification of surface effect and phase transformation of single crystalline transition metals and semiconducting materials. In nano thin films, prediction of the elastic modulus, thermal expansion, nonlinear behavior as well as an efficient bridging scheme to the continuum models have been successfully completed and extended to the optimum design problem of nanoporous and nanospring structures. As a result, applicability to practical design problem such NEMS/MEMS structures through the integration of the nanopartterning and fabrication process has been confirmed. In case of nanowire, shape memory and pseudoelastic behaviors, application to a pressure sensor through the twining and phase transition and related thermoelastic behavior have been studied. Important outcomes including a new shape memory mechanism as a result of cyclic loading-unloading behavior and various phase transition-related unique behaviors has been revealed by atomistic simulations. In nanocomposites, the embedded filler size dependent mechanical and thermal properties related to the interphase zone effect has been studied, and both micromechancis and finite element-based multiscale models to describe the filler size effect have been proposed. In nanocrystalline structure, cohesive zone model parameters to describe macroscopic inter granular fracture are obtained from various tilted boundary region of transition metal structure. Through the cohesive law parameterization, multiscale finite element scheme to hierarchically describe local opening mode of grain boundary zone has been established.
Expected Contribution
Anticipated impact of the developed multiscale bridging technology through the five years' research project is based on the understanding of new phenomenological evolution of functional advanced materials and the settled prediction of the potential applicability of new microstrucrtures, thus, can be diversely applied as a generic technology in the field of nano materials, energy systems, biotechnology etc. Accumulated database on the physical properties of various nanostructures obtained from the present research and the developed novel approaches to resolve both accuracy and efficiency in predicting optimum microstructure can serve as a new standardized strategy to enhance the conventional route to design and manufacture for nano materials and as a comparable generic technology to accelerate the development of integrated analysis/design/manufacture paradigm
