Purpose&contents
Among high-tech science, space technology is usually viewed as a state of the art technology representing the level of a nation' s power. The demand of satellite launch of various sizes are growing these days, and thus, a variety of launch vehicle suited for each mission will be required. From this perspective, the hybrid rocket system using commercial HTPB and polymers fuels(PE, PMMA, Paraffin), and liquid oxidizers(LOX, N2O) complements the shortcomings of solid and liquid rocket engine still taking advantages of these latter. Compared to developed countries such as USA and France, the hybrid rocket system gained during this research program has shorted the gap existing in hybrid combustion technology and also in hybrid rocket system design with affordable cost in a short term.
In this study, experimental hybrid sounding rockets have been designed and test fired to obtain core combustion technology and to confirm its applicability without endangering its safety behavior. First stage goal has been achieved by developing 1ton-class thrust hybrid propellant capable of delivering 1 kg payload followed by second stage where final projectile production reaching altitude of 15 km is undergone.
Moreover, static firing of 2 ton-class thrust hybrid rocket provided important amount of database that will be useful in understanding the physics behind the combustion characteristics of hybrid rocket motor.
Result
During this research study dedicated to the development of lab-scale and full-scale hybrid rocket motor, hybrid sounding rockets were designed, manufactured and test fired to confirm its safety and check its broad applicability of hybrid system.
Combustion characteristics unique for hybrid rocket combustion are analyzed using test results database for its performance analysis and combustion instability study. In the second stage, 2 ton-class thrust level hybrid rocket capable of containing payload 2 kg reaching altitude 60 km was designed where static firing was performed. Proven design tools were developed and system engineering technology was secured by performing design, analysis and experiments in all procedures for sounding rocket propellant production and test firing. At the same time, as a basic research, various studies on combustion characteristics were performed with 1) different type of solid fuels and oxidizers, 2) numerous fuel grain shapes(tapered, Diaphragm, mixer), 3)spray characteristics of liquid oxidizer depending on phase change, 4) CFD analysis of combustion, and 5) the development of visualization device to understand the physico-chemical characteristics of hybrid combustion. Special emphasis on high combustion rate of liquefying fuel and blended fuel was made, and novel measurement technique of local regression rate is developed. Besides, combustion instability analysis for multi-port grain, end-burning grain as well as cylindrical grain highlighted the inherent instability behavior of hybrid rocket motor.
Expected Contribution
The fundamental knowledges of hybrid combustion and sounding rocket production/test firing experiences gained throughout this study can not only be contributed to scientific laboratories, industries and academics but also be applied to various space launch research fields as well as to general social organizations. The acquired hybrid rocket design techniques and meaningful huge experimental data can be served to national laboratories for a quantum leap forward in national space program.
Technical professionals can also be provided to related laboratories.
The first commercial space launch vehicle, SpaceShipTwo using hybrid rocket motor has proven the potential of safe hybrid motor. An important turning point of propulsion technology can be achieved in Korean space program if this hybrid technology is applied to either light commercial spacecraft or boosters for a space launcher or even to a Hybrid-Ramjet propulsion system. Finally, it is expected that the achievement of this study will boost interest in aerospace engineering and will run a variety of educational programs for high school and college students ready to be grown into specialists and professionals for Korea future aerospace experts.
