PET/MRI and PET/CT are the most up-to-date clinical diagnostic systems utilizing fusion imaging, and allow high resolution diagnostic images that were not feasible with previous systems. Currently, no approval process and criteria are available for the assessment of the fusion systems. The current approval process depends on the criteria for the individual system parts. Sets of criteria and methods to assess the safety and scientific integrity of the fusion systems as a whole are required.
The purpose of this study was to develop a schema to assess the safety and performance of the latest fusion imaging systems available nationally (PET/MRI, PET/CT) in collaboration with the experts from a diverse background.
In order to develop the regulatory items necessary to assess the safety and performance of the latest fusion imaging systems, the current national and international advances, indications according to various disease entities, national and international availability and systems classifications were investigated. Various international specifications and guidelines that may be applicable to the assessment of safety and performance of the latest fusion imaging systems were examined and analyzed.Specialists from the industry, academy and research fields cooperated to form a council of experts, and generated a list of requirements, test items and criteria for assessing the latest fusion imaging systems. A guideline to assess the safety and performance of the PET/MRI, PET/CT systems was proposed.
The criteria to assess the safety and performance of the PET/CT system are composed of tests of the electric and mechanical safety from the current national CT test specifications, test for electromagnetic wave obstacles, test for radiation safety, test for PET performance (NEMA NU2), and test for co-registration. The criteria to assess the PET/MRI are composed of tests for electric and mechanical safety from the current national MRI test specifications, test for electromagnetic wave obstacles, test for MR performance, test for PET performance (NEMA NU2), and test for co-registration. The criteria for PET/MRI assessment should be tested with both systems turned on.
The results of this study were incorporated to develop guidelines to assess the safety and performance of the latest fusion imaging systems (PET/MRI, PET/CT) and to provide the foundation for early commercialization of products.
