Applying density functional theory (DFT) and DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have theoretically investigated chemical reactions of greenhouse gases on a catalytic surface Ni(111). In recent experiments, carbon deposition on the catalyst and the subsequent growth of high-quality graphene has been reported, where the carbon atoms originating from greenhouse gas molecules are supposed to contribute to the carbon deposition. In the current computational study, we have specifically focused on the reactions of CH4 and CO2 mixed gases relevant to this carbon deposition on Ni(111). The Ni(111) is the least reactive surface among the Ni(100), (110), and (111) surfaces in terms of the reaction with CO2. We used a van der Waals corrected DFT (DFT-D2) scheme to alleviate the problem of conventional DFT schemes that seriously underestimate the interactions between the molecules and the Ni(111) surface. Applying the DFT-D2 correction, binding energies were corrected from −0.03 eV to −0.27 eV for CH4, and from +0.07 eV to −0.19 eV for CO2. We found that the calculated binding energies of the gas molecules at the zero temperature regime show very weak binding trend, which are expected to become more negligible as the temperature increases. However, we found from ab initio MD simulations that the introduction of temperature and molar density variables can show energetic CO2 adsorption on the Ni(111) surface. Mulliken charge population analysis was performed and showed increasing charge transfer from the CO2 to the catalyst surface, converting the Ni surface from p-type to the partially n-type. It was also found that the surface chemistry is changed by the CO2 adsorption, which affects the CH4 – Ni surface interaction. Activation energy barriers for a CO2 adsorption with or without the surrounding CH4 molecules were calculated to be in the range of 0.25 eV ~ 0.30 eV. Single CO2 molecular adsorption showed the lowest energy barrier, 0.26 eV, and other energy barriers seem to be negligibly affected by the surrounding CH4 molecules. We conclude that the entropic driving force drives the CO 2 adsorption, and the successive change of surface chemistry is expected to play a key role in the CH4–surface interaction.
