Air shower(최고 압력은 200 lbs, shower 시간은 과실 한 개당 10-14초)에 의한 해충제거효과를 검토하였다.

Section 1. Current State of Persimmon Farming and Pest Management in Sweet Persimmon Orchards in Korea
1. Current State of Pesticide Application
Current state of pesticide application in sweet persimmon orchards was surveyed through questionnaire from 62 farmers in 2000 and 17 farmers in 2001 in Jinju, Sacheon, Changwon, Changyoung, and Gimhae in Korea.
Average application times were 7.6 in 2000 and 7.7 in 2001. Out of the total surveyed farmers, % of farmers applied pesticides were higher in June and July than those in other months. Total number of fungicide and insecticide items used were 36 and 34 in 2000, and 22 and 23 in 2001, respectively.
The date of the last application of pesticides was in the middle of September. The fungicides such as mancozeb, thiophanate-methyl, and benomyl were frequently used in 2000, and lime sulfur, benomyl and carbendazim were in 2001. The insecticides such as deltamethrin, methidathion, and fenitrothion were frequently used in both years. Out of the pesticides used by the farmers, around 50% of the pesticide items have not been registered for the persimmon in Korea.
2. Farmer's Idea for Increasing Net Income of Persimmon Farming
The pest management of sweet persimmon out of persimmon production (Diospyrosi kaki; Fuyu) was investigated by questionnaire to develop control methods which were required from importing countries as farm income programmes. More than 80% of Korean sweet persimmon farmers were over fifties. The most important factor for sweet persimmon production was diseases. Sixty-five percentage of sweet persimmon growers answered that the disease, Gloeosporium kaki was most serious and 73.5% answered that the insect, stink bugs were the key pests. However, all farmers thought that peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis punctiferalis which was a main insect pest in quarantine of the United States was no longer a pest because of easy control. The farmers depended on their experience for the pest management and decision of pesticides and application time.
Fifty-seven % of sweet persimmon growers sprayed pesticides 8∼ times a year and more than 80 % of farmers recorded their pest control history.
Thirty-five % of sweet persimmon growers thought that the cost of pesticides was a main problem in persimmon production and 26.5 % of farmers lacked in knowledge about pests. Sweet persimmon growers of 94.7 % answered "Yes" when they were asked whether they would like to export, if possible, their fruits.
Section 2. Occurrence of Important Insect Pests and Its Damage in Sweet Persimmon Orchards
1. New Record of Japanese Gall-forming Thrips (Ponticulothrips diospyrosi Haga et Okajima) (Phlaeothripidae) and its Damage
A thysanopteran pest was collected from the damaged leaves of Fuyu persimmon (Diospyrosi kaki) at Changwon, Gyeongnam province in June, 2000. The thrips was identified as Japanese gall-forming thrips Ponticulothrips diospyrosi (Phlaeothripidae) and a newly recorded pest in Korea. Brief morphological and ecological characters, damage symptoms, and distribution in Gyeongnam province are provided.
2. Seasonal Occurrence of Smaller Clearwing Moth, Synanthedom tenuis, in Sweet Persimmon Orchards in Korea.
The seasonal occurrence of smaller clearwing moth (Synanthedom tenuis) was monitored by sex pheromone trap at sweet persimmon orchards in Kimhae in Korea for 3 years, 1998 and 2001-2002. It showed 2 clear peaks a year. The 1st generation of the moth occurred from mid May to early July, and the 2nd one from late July to late September, showing peaks at early June and early or mid August, respectively.
3. Seasonal Occurrence Pattern of Peach Pyralid Moth, Dichocrosis punctiferalis, in Sweet Persimmon Orchards and Fruit Damage at Harvesting Time
Seasonal occurrence pattern of the peach pyralid moth (PPM), Dichocrosis punctiferalis, was studied in Sweet persimmon orchards under different control pressures in southern region of Korea by sex pheromone traps and mercury light traps from 2000 to 2001. Fruit damage by the larvae was also checked at harvesting time from 1999 to 2001. The pattern showed 3 distinct peaks; the 1st one in mid to late June, the 2nd one in mid to late August, and the 3rd one in late September. Number of PPM catches were higher in less controlled orchards than in those controlled intensively. There were no persimmon fruits damaged by the larvae of PPM and persimmon fruit moth, Stathmopoda masinissa, in our samples from the testing orchards at harvesting time. Therefore there is a bare possibility that these two quarantine pests are included in the exporting fruits. Based on plantations adjacent to the tested orchards and zero levels of fruit damage due to the larvae, there is a strong possibility that the moths flew to persimmon orchards to be attracted to traps from neighbouring chestnut trees or other host plants.
4. Seasonal Occurrence of Hemipteran Bugs in Sweet Persimmon Orchards
The seasonal occurrence trends of the brown-winged green bug, Plautia stali, and the brown malmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were monitored in sweet persimmon orchards in southern region of Korea using light traps (in 2000 and 2001), and aggregation pheromone traps (methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate)) of P. stali (in 2001). Light trap data showed that H. halys started to occur from the end of June, and reached its peak in early or mid August, while P. stali was mostly attracted to the traps from mid July to late August without any distinct attraction peak. Both species did not occur after September in the persimmon orchards studied. The attraction patterns of both species to aggregation pheromone traps were different from those observed in light traps. Both species were attracted to the pheromone traps from mid May to late August. The peak occurrence of H. halys could not be detected due to low catches. However, the period of peak attraction for P. stali was from late June to late August depending on the geographical locations. The aggregation pheromone traps of P. stali attracted more number of P. stali than H. halys, but the light traps showed a reverse pattern. In both species, more females were attracted to the aggregation pheromone traps than males. The difference of attraction patterns between 2 types of traps was discussed in relation to content of soluble tannin in persimmon fruits.
5. Scarabs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Sweet Persimmon Orchards and Effect on Sweet Persimmon
Occurrence of scarabs at sweet persimmon (Diospyrosi kaki, var: Fuyu) orchards was investigated by mercury light traps every one week interval in Jinju, Sacheon, Sancheong, and Gimhae, Gyeongnam province from April to September in 2000 and 2001. In addition, damage by scarabs was observed every ten days interval at three orchards in Jinju and at one in Gimhae from late May to late October. Although sixteen species of 12 genera were attracted to the traps, species and number of catches were different according to orchards and years. Out of them Holotrichia morosa was dominant in Jinju, Sacheon, and Sancheong. Total number of scarabs attracted to the traps was highest at the orchard surrounded by chestnut orchards in Sancheong. The fruits of were not damaged by scarabs at studied orchards. However, leaves and calyxes were slightly damaged by Adoretus tenuimaculatus. Maximum average number of the damaged leaves and calyxes throughout the year by A. tenuimaculatus was 0.33 leaves from 10 new shoots and 0.07 calyxes from 15 fruits. Gametis jucunda and Popillia mutans damaged flowers and calyxes. Maximum average number of damaged flowers and calyxes by these 2 species was the same as 0.03 from 15 flowers and 15 calyxes, respectively. These levels of damage make us conclude that the scarabs are not economically injurious to sweet persimmon fruits in Korea.
Section 3. Arthropod Pests Existing on Persimmon Fruits after Harvest, and Development of Some Techniques to Eliminate Those Pests
1. Arthropod Pests on Persimmon Fruits after Harvest
To export persimmon fruits to other countries, it has to be proven that there is no quarantine pests on the harvested fruits. To get information about what kind of and how much the insect or other arthropod species were present in the harvested fruits, the fruits purchased from farmer's orchards were carefully inspected from 1999 to 2001.
The fruits from 9 orchards were inspected in 1999. The damage due to hemipteran bugs was most serious. The fruits damaged varied from 0.0 to 56.7 % by the orchards. Mite species observed from the harvested fruits were 1 species of fungus-feeding mite, one of predatory mite, one of minute mite which has not been identified yet, and two spotted spider mite. The percentages of fruits which had scale insects or mites varied greatly by the orchards. However there were no insects or mites on the fruits from 2 orchards. This means that the insects or mites can be completely controlled from fruits by a certain control program during growing season. The fruits harvested from 12 orchards in 2000 were carefully inspected, according to the three steps of selection process; ① selection during harvest works, ② selection by grower themselves, and ③ selection by the grower's union just before packing. The fruits with calyx-ctracking symptom and the damage symptom by hemipteran bugs could be removed by the selection processes up to 50 % and 80 %, respectively. The species on or under calyx were scale insects, collembolan, T. kanzawai, and fungus-feeding mites.
Conspicuously were there more insects and mites under the calyx than on the calyx. The percentage of the fruits with these arthropods ranged 16-19%, and these percentages could not be reduced by the selection processes, possibly due to very small (not easily seen) size of them and also due to the protection by the calyx. Therefore it is needed to develop new and effective techniques to eliminate those arthropods out of the harvested fruits. The fruits harvested from 7 orchards were inspected in 2001 up to the step ② of the selection processes, to know whether the larvae of the persimmon fruit moth (PFM) and peach pyralid moth (PPM) were present in the fruits.
From 3 years' inspection we could not find any fruits in which the larval of PFM and PPM are.
2. Elimination of Pests on Persimmon Fruits
Insects or mites on the exported fruits should be removed to meet the quarantine requirements of diverse persimmon importing countries. We tested a few methods to remove or kill the pests on persimmon fruit. The efficacies of hot-air treatment and air shower by compressed air were tested on 'Fuyu' persimmon. The effect of dipping in ethanol on survival of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) was also tested. Hot air (5 0℃) treatment for 4 h showed 99.4% mortality of T. urticae. However >3 h treatment at 45℃ and >1 h treatment at 50℃ caused softening of the fruits. Increasing ethanol concentrations from 20% to 70% significantly increased mite mortality for diapausing and nondiapausing T. urticae. Immersion of nondiapausing T. urticae in 80% ethanol for >10 m achieved 100% mortality.
Immersion of diapausing T. urticae in 60-80% ethanol for >10 m caused 100% mortality of the mites. This ethanol treatment method could be applied to other fruits which the fruit quality is not affected by ethanol treatment than persimmon. The efficacy of air shower by a compressor (max W.P., 200 lbs; 10-14 sec shower/fruit) on the removal of pests on persimmon fruits was tested. Collembolan, fungus-feeding mites, and leaf mites are on and under calyx were the common pests on persimmon fruits.
All the pests on calyx could be removed by the air shower treatment. However the pests under calyx were resistant to the air shower treatment. Density of collembolan and leaf mites could be reduced to the level of 2 individuals per 100 fruits (98% removal). However, the fungus-feeding mites could not be removed by the air shower because of the high initial density of the mite and the calyx resistance to air blow. Therefore it comes evident that the air shower treatment cannot achieve 100% removal of the pests
under calyx, and from this the reason other alternatives should be developed.
3. Changes in Pest Density on Sweet Persimmon during Low
Temperature Storage
Insects or mites on the exporting fruits should not be allowed to meet the quarantine requirements of importing countries. Some fruits are stored before shipment for export at -1±0.5℃. Density changes of the pests on persimmon were checked during the low temperature storage (LTS). The collembolan could be killed by LTS. Density of collembolan under calyx decreased to one-tenth of the initial after a 20-d storage. No collembolan survived after 56-d storage. The LTS resulted in high mortality of the fungus-feeding mite and leaf mite. There were no fungus-feeding and leaf mites on the fruits after a 74- and a 56-d storage, respectively. However the overwintering eggs of grape-myrtle scale (Eriococcus largerstroemiae Kuwana) survived the LTS. Some of them were still alive after a 74-d storage; 5-13% of the sample fruits had the eggs under their calyxes. Therefore the fruits from the orchards infested by E. lagerstroemiae should be treated differently to kill the scales.
Section 4. Development of Pest Management Program to meet the Quarantine Requirements of Other Countries
1. Quarantine Pests and Maximum Residue Level of Japan and America
Information was obtained through literatures, internet sites, and visit to the country on insect pests of forest, fruit trees, and persimmon trees, and on maximum residue level (MRL) of pesticides for pome fruits of America.
History of persimmon cultivation, pest problems, and kinds of pesticides used in fruit orchards in America were reviewed. And agricultural products and its related insect pests for which importation is not allowed were also briefly listed. Insect pests of forest and fruit trees were separately treated by the south and east America. And based on the reviewed lists, common insect pests of forest, fruit trees, and persimmon tree was arranged.
2. Incorporation of New Control Programs for Quarantine Pests
Temporary control schedules were tested at sweet persimmon orchards to development new control programs to meet the quarantine requirements of America in 2001 and 2002. The 'MRL-type control orchards' were sprayed with chemicals which were possibly adaptable to the pome trees in America. A control schedule consisted of those chemicals registered for persimmon in Korea was incorporated in the 'domestic-type control orchards'. The efficacy of these two control types against plant diseases and insect pests was compared with that of a conventional control schedule.
In 2001, MRL orchard and domestic orchard were sprayed 5 times, and two conventional orchards were 6 and 9 times, respectively. In 2002, acaricide was added once to the MRL orchards at late September to reduce the density of mites on harvested fruits. However no insecticide for plant bug control could be applied to the MRL orchards, because no insecticide against bugs was registered for pome trees in America. This resulted in 7 times of applications in MRL and domestic orchards. The conventional orchard was sprayed 9 times.
Only the occurrence of the peach pyralid moth (PPM) out of 4 quarantine insect species was observed. The PPM was observed during growing season in MRL, domestic, and conventional orchards. However no fruits damaged by PPM larvae were observed after mid October and after harvest. In 2002 only 1 fruit out of 1350 fruits inspected in June was damaged by the larvae of PPM at MRL orchards. This damage was suspected to be resulted by the moths migrated from surrounding chestnut forest, not from the persimmon orchard studied. Sixteen species of non-quarantine insects out of 15 families of 6 orders occurred during growing season on leaves, branches, and fruits for 2 years of experiment. A fungus-feeding mites and collembolan were under calyx of harvested fruits.
In 2001 they were found on 45.3% of harvested fruits at MRL orchard.
However the percentage of fruits with mites in 2002 was greatly reduced to 3.5% at MRL orchard, presumably because of a added application of acaricide at late September. However percentage of fruits damaged by hemipteran bugs at harvesting time was quite high as 11.3% at MRL orchards, because no application of insecticide against plant bugs. Azoxystrobin was detected by below the maximum residue level (0.04 ppm) from the fruits harvested at MRL orchards. These results suggest that new control programs could be developed by modifying the MRL-type control schedule tested in this study to meet the quarantine requirements of America, if we could suppress the damage of plant bugs.
