A demand for abalone meat exists in southern Korea where coastal harvesting of wild animals has increased from 2,062 MT in 2005 to 6,228 MT in 2010. Abalones are also cultured in southern Korea, particularly in the coastal waters of the Jeonnam provinces, where Haliotis discus hannai is the most common species. Korean coastal waters, however, have been polluted by many anthropogenic sources that affect dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. For instance, DO levels within a near shore abalone farm can drop as low as 40% of saturation (4.0 mg/L). Therefore, to expand abalone aquaculture operations, one option is to consider more exposed, often underutilized sites where respiratory dissolved gas exchange is better. These sites, however, can be subjected to high energy conditions that include strong oceanic currents and irregular seas, especially those related to typhoon events.
Moving the existing structures to the more exposed sites is not recommended because most of the existing abalone cage systems utilize net cages mounted to raft-type structures, which maintain buoyancy with Styrofoam billets mounted under polyethylene pipe square collars. These cage systems are fragile and most have been destroyed by typhoons with high waves and strong currents in 2011 and 2012. Thus, a rigorous engineering approach needs to be taken to design an abalone cage system for exposed environments.
The primary objective of this study is to develop a commercial-size submersible abalone cage grow-out system with a modular box structure which is described for the application of exposed site deployment.
The submersible abalone cage examined in this study can be moved vertically within the water column by adjusting weight and buoyancy forces. It is raised to the surface by injecting compressed air into ballast tanks. Once at the surface, the modules can be inspected, cleaned and the animals fed. When the husbandry operations are completed, air is released from the ballast tanks and the structure is submerged for approximately 7 to 10 days. The size of the system is 14.1×14.1×3.2 m (L×B×D). The entire abalone containment structure contains sixteen boxes (each with sixteen plastic plate shelters in a box) filled with abalone and kelp (in each individual caged container). The containers are organized in a 4×4 symmetric geometry within a framed structure. Each container (also called a cabinet)can also be raised above the frame to facilitate husbandry and maintenance. This was an important design consideration in an effort to keep fouling organisms off of the cabinets to minimize changes in the hydrostatic and flow-through characteristics of the abalone farm structure. The system was designed for deployment in a location with depth of 30 m. The individual containers have dimensions of 2.4×2.4×3 m3,and the spacing between cabinets is 0.9 m. The submersible abalone cage consists of 16 cabinets, and 16 plastic shelters are installed with in each cabinet. The upper, lower, and side parts of the cabinet are all surrounded by nylon netting(Td 210×9, mesh size: 30 mm, twine diameter: 2 mm). Each abalone shelter also consists of 6 sheets of polyethylene plate(thickness: 2.4 mm; space of plate: 132 mm)with an outer frame(PP pipe diameter: 32 mm). The size of a shelter is 950×865× 480mm(L×B×D).
A set of tests were conducted at a depth of 15 m near Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for 295 days (23 July, 2012 to 13 May, 2013). A total of 155 sea cucumbers were used and fed a mixed diet containing mud, mineral, wheat, fish meal, etc (3% of their body weight). At the end of the experiments, sea cucumber showed a higher survival rate in feed shelter (77.14%) rather than no feed shelter (64.71%). The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumbers in feed condition (0.04% d-1) was higher than that of no feed culture animals (-0.49% d-1) during total experimental periods. The result was able to find a no significance difference in survival rate but a significance difference in SGR under feed and no feed treatments.
The co-culture potential of juvenile abalone with sea cucumbers presents a simple yet tremendous opportunity to expand existing monoculture techniques. Both products have substantial market demand and if the wastes of the abalone can be used as food for the sea cucumber, then both economic and sustainability goals could be addressed. The objective was to conduct a laboratory experiment, with the same containment structures, to determine if the sea cucumbers would use organic matter (food residues and feces) as a food source produced from the abalone and would show positive growth rates. The design of both containment structures included surfaces for both species to reside and move around. One of the structures utilized vertical plates with access holes between sections (called the UC) while the other was a combination of tube and plate sections (called the TC).
The procedure included placing both structures in separate seawater flow through tank systems each with juvenile abalone and sea cucumbers for 7 months. The intent was to examine the growth rates of each set of animals under the same, external flow field conditions. During the experiments, only the abalone was fed. Results of the sea cucumber growth experiments showed that the animals in the UC structure grew to 7.50 g from an initial wet weight value of 3.37 g. In the TC structure, however, the results were not as promising with total growth measured at 1.4 g from an initial wet weight of 3.61 g. During the 202 day experiment, specific growth rates of 0.40 and 0.47% in the UC and TC, were calculated − respectively.
A series of experiments were carried out in order to investigate the survival and growth rates of octopus for TC and DC in Experiment 1 and for TC, DC and WC in Experiment 2.
The cage models were made of polypropylene pipe for the frames and cover nets (mesh size: 5.0 mm). The sizes of the cage models were 1,100L×600B×500D mm, composed of PE eel pots (hiding place: Φ130 mm×42 pieces, total volume: 0.33 m3) in TC, 1000L×500B×500D mm, constructed of PVC pipes (hiding place: Φ130 mm×12 pieces, total volume: 0.25 m3) in DC and 1070L×520B×790D mm in WC (waste tire : Φ578 mm×3 pieces, total volume: 0.41 m3).
In Experiment 1, rearing systems TC and DC models were setup at the sea bottom and an in-situ test was conducted at a depth of 15 m in Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for a period of 55 days (23 July to 2 October, 2012). In Experiment 2, TC, DC and WC models were set up in an indoor running water tank (7,000L×6000B×820D mm, water depth: 0.82 m) at Chonnam National University, Yeosu, Korea. Two ongrowing tests were conducted for 72-46 days (2 April to 13 June, 2013).
In Experiment 1, a total of 23 octopuses were used, with an initial body wet weight of 342.82±198.79 g. At this site, the water temperatures ranged from 10.01 to 27.54℃, and salinity ranged from 30 to 32.79 psu. In Experiment 2, a total of 60 octopuses were used with an initial body wet weight of 422.37 ± 163.42 g. The water temperatures, salinity, DO and pH in the water tank ranged from 10.88 to 21.73°C, 25.15 to 34.99 psu, 8.63 to 7.96 mg/L, 7.87 to 8, respectively.
Octopuses were fed a mixed diet containing sardine and manila clam (approximately 3-8% of their body weights). The results of the experiments were analyzed with the statistical computer package SPSS ver. 21 from IBM.
In Experiment 1, the octopuses showed a higher mortality in TC (92%) than in DC (80%) during the experimental period. The survival rates of grouped octopuses in DC were higher by 12% than those of the individual (TC) octopus reared in TC. As the water temperature increased to 27.54℃, however, the survival rates in TC and DC decreased rapidly to 7.69% and 20%, respectively. In addition, the growth rates of the octopus was reduced in the two cages due to the high temperature (25 to 27.54℃), which lasted over the course ℃ of two weeks.
In Experiment 2, the survival rates of octopus in DC (80-80%) and WC (70-90%) were higher than those of the TC (20-30%). The survival rates of grouped octopuses in DC and WC were higher by 50-60% than those of octopuses reared individually in TC. By contrast, the growth rate, or the specific growth rate of octopus in TC (0.46-1.04% d-1), was slightly higher than those of in DC (0.3-0.04% d-1) and WC (0.00–0.88% d-1).
In the development process, in-situ tests were conducted to assess the performance of the submersion mechanism and the reliability of the cage system. The successful performance of the cage system and the effective vertical movements of the cage system during the tests, shows promise that such a system could be used to avoid extreme winds and waves and other types of surface contamination.
The results of the fluid-structure and component analysis clearly indicate that the highest values are found while the cage is at the surface. In the submerged configuration, the surface buoy attachments are the components where the highest forces are likely to be found. At this location, it is likely that cyclical and snap loads associated with surface wave conditions may also prove to be damaging to the shackles used to connect the buoys to the mooring system. The maximum stress found within the cabinet approached 1400 MPa, while in the frame stresses exceeded the yield value of 620 MPa for this material. Therefore, submerging the system would be critical in any high-energy storm event.
