2. Development of high performance technology for railroad infrastructure
IV. Results
(1) Investigation of mixture proportions on the high-strength according to strength levels
To develop the database for the mixture proportions of Eco-HPC under development in this study, domestic and foreign literatures and patents related to high performance concrete were investigated. According to the results, the high performance concretes uses blast-furnace slag, fly ash, and silica fume for admixture and the water-to-binder ratios are around 20%. The compressive strengths are in the range of 100 to 150MPa. Also, the patents related to high performance concrete are focused on the reaction accelerator, type and particle size distribution of aggregates, and mixture proportions.
(2) Analysis of state-of-the-art on the eco-friendly aggregates and their fundamental properties
To examine the applicability of eco-friendly aggregates, the status and fundamental properties of recycled aggregates and slag aggregates were investigated. The recycled aggregates are mainly used for materials for subbase of pavement (31%), filling or back-fill materials (45%). However, amount of recycled aggregate used is decreasing because of the reduction of investment to SOC. In particular, recycled aggregate used in concrete is very low, only about 7%. The amount of slag aggregates used is very little because of porous characteristics and long transport distance.
(3) Development of optimal mixture proportions for Eco-HPC
To develop the optimal mixture proportions for Eco-HPC, based on the mixture proportions of binder studied in the 1styear research, this study investigated the fluidity and strength of Eco-HPC according to the mixture proportions such as the replacement ratio of GGBFS, water-binder ratio, maximum size of coarse aggregate and sand-aggregate ratio. According to the test results, the fluidity of concrete containing GGBFS is higher than that of conventional Portland cement concrete, and the 28-day compressive strength is higher than the target compressive strength (80MPa) with the water-to-binder ratio of 20% and the GGBFS replacement level of 65%. However, lowering the water-to-binder ratio increases the dosage of high-range water-reducing admixture (HRWRA), and then, increases the possibility of segregation and the viscosity of the mix, resulting in low workability. Therefore, the water-to-binder should be increased up to the range the target strength can beachieved. The test results on the compressive strength of mortars according to the water-to-binder ratios reveal that the water-to-binder ratio of 23% may be adequate.
As discussed above, the optimal mixture proportions are determined as follows, based on the concrete properties according to the mixture proportions, considering the improvement of workability of fresh concrete, reducing the amount of HRWRA, and the availability of aggregates.
• Water-binder 23%
• Maximum size of coarse aggregate 19mm
• Sand percent 37%
• GGBFS replacement percent 65%
Based on these results, the characteristics of concrete with the mixture proportions determined above were investigated. It turned out to have higher fluidity and its compressive strength satisfied the target value, reaching 90MPa or more at 28 days and higher than 100MPa at 56 days.
In the 3rdyear research, several long-term behavior and durability tests such as the volume change, creep, resistance to freezing and thawing, resistance to chloride penetration and accelerated carbonation will be performed, and the test specimens have been manufactured for the long-term behavior and durability tests.
(4) Feasibility study on the application of Eco-HPC to railway bridges
To study the feasibility for the application of Eco-HPC to railway bridges, the literature survey has been performed on the mechanical properties of high strength concrete such as creep, shrinkage and elastic modulus and the durability such as carbonation, resistance to chemical degradation, water-tightness, resistance to chloride penetration, alkali-silica reaction, resistance to sea water and resistance to freezing and thawing. The results demonstrate that all properties of high strength concrete are suitable for the railway bridge, except the control of cracking. The high strength concrete has low water-to-binder ratio and high amount of binder, and thus, experiences smaller creep deformation and higher autogenous shrinkage than conventional strength concrete. Therefore, the control of cracking is very important. For this, in the 3rdyear research, the volume change and creep tests will be performed.
3. Concrete curing by microwave heat system
The curing of precast concrete structure is one of main production processes which cover about 70% of its total manufacturing period, and at least 10 to 15% of its manufacturing cost. The conventional steam curing inevitably leads to fossil fuel consumption, causes rust on the steel form, and always makes the precast plant damp. With such a background, microwave heat curing technology has been newly developed in Korea, which can produce the precast concrete structure environmentally and economically. From the field test for precast concrete slab and culvert, it is found that this technology is able to complete the whole curing process only by electric power without fossil fuel, and provide the clean precast plant. Besides, microwave heat curing technology substantially reduced the curing cost by around 80% without loss of concrete quality (strength) comparing with conventional steam curing.
4. Development for Core Technology of High-Speed Rigid-Bar System
A Rigid-Bar system is more than 15% of the tunnel construction cost reduction and has maintenance advatages comparing with catenary system. However, all of the system depends on import in Korea and we have no experience in technology development for Rigid-bar system. Therefore a program for prediction of dynamic chatacteristics between Rigid-bar system and pantograph was developed last year.
In this year, a fundamental design direction of Rigid-bar system for high-speed operation was proposed. And, in order to propose a measurement method of contact loss using current measurement of a train, a basic study was performed.
