Purpose&contents
This research proposal has the final goal to enhance photoconversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells via fabrication of free-standing and patterned semiconductor nanowires that are able to be easily controlled by a novel printing platform for patterning of catalyst nanodots on substrates. To reach to this goal, we will carry out and develop several sub-techniques:
1) Printing platform of catalyst nanodots patterned by contact-printing method
2) Fabrication and control of free-standing semiconductor nanowires over the catalyst nanodots
3) Optimization of photoelectrode fashioned of the free-standing semiconductor nanowires
4) Application of the free-standing semiconductor nanowires to actual photovoltaic cells.
Result
For this research proposal, which is able to control and grow in pattern of semiconductor nanowires, we will develop a new technique for controlling the diameter, distance, and population of free-standing semiconductor nanowires over catalyst nanodots that are controlled and nicely patterned by using a novel printing platform for direct contact-printing of catalyst nanodots on substrates. Following studies will be performed:
1) Printing platform of catalyst nanodots patterned by contact-printing method Nano-sized stamp is developed, and catalyst nanodots are printed over substrates by using the stamp with diameters from 30 to 200 nm and interval from 10 to 200 nm.
2) Fabrication and control of free-standing semiconductor nanowires over the catalyst nanodots
A number of free-standing semiconductor nanowires are grown selectively over the printed catalyst nanodots. The diameter, distance, and population of free-standing semiconductor nanowires are readily controlled according to the patterns of the printed metal catalyst nanodots.
3) Optimization of photoelectrode fashioned of the free-standing semiconductor nanowires For highly enhanced photoelecric properties, the free-standing semiconductor nanowires, that are controlled by their diameter, distance, population and length(5nm-50μm), will be exploited for high electrical conductivity, low sheet resistance, high transmittance, and high absorption for high performance photoelectrodes.
4) Application of the free-standing semiconductor nanowires to actual photovoltaic cells Depending on the characteristics of photoelectrodes fashioned of controlled free-standing semiconductor nanowires, they will be applied to photovoltiac cells such as organic solar cells, hybrid solar cells, photoelectrochemical cells, and dye-sensitized solar cells. Highly improved photoconversion efficiency by at least 50% will be demonstrated as compared to the previous reports.
Expected Contribution
The high photoelecric properties to enhance photoconversion efficiency can be obtained from controlled free-standing semiconductor nanowires grown by the printed catalyst nanodots. The free-standing semiconductor nanowires can provide efficient photo-absorption ability and outstanding charge transport features for photovoltaic cells. Furthermore, our technologies of contact-printing of nanoscale patterned nanodots and growth of semiconductor nanowires will be of great contribution of nanotechnology to control various nanostructures.
