It will be conducted to study on evaluation an applicability of nano-enhanced membrane for forward osmosis-reverse osmosis hybrid desalination. This study includes 1) fabrication of nano-enhanced membrane for forward osmosis, 2) characterization of the nano-enhanced membrane, 3) operation and evaluation of the nano-enhanced membrane for forward osmosis-reverse osmosis hybrid desalination process. The candidate could be asymmetric polymeric membrane or thin-film composite membrane. Based on bare membrane, nanomaterial would be applied to fabricate nano-enhanced membrane for forward osmosis. The membrane would be characterized and operated in lab-scale forward osmosis process for applicability evaluation. Next, the membrane would be applied to lab-scale forward osmosis-reverse osmosis hybrid process. Concretely critical membrane performances would be measured – water flux, salt rejection, fouling resistance, or flux recovery.
[Section 2]
Rhamnolipid reduced biofouling with the decrease of the surface free energy between the rhamnolipid and biofouling layer, as did the negative surface charge. The concentrations of carbohydrate and protein were reduced. In particular, rhamnolipid interacted with glucosamine of carbohydrate and N source and amide group of protein. As well as the physicochemical interactions, inhibition of quorum sensing (QS) system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 by rhamnolipid was investigated. Rhamnolipids were found to inhibit the production of virulence factors and biofilm formation. The present study is the first attempt to find mechanism of rhamnolipid mediated biofouling reduction with the physicochemical and molecular biological approaches.
[Section 3]
Among desalination processes, SWRO is well established and commercialized technology during several decades. However, fouling still remain as a big problem of reduction for process efficiency. To understand of transport phenomena through the membrane, molecular dynamics study is needed. To figure out seawater particles behavior through the polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis membrane, the membrane structure and the transport properties of modeled polyamide membranes apply FT30 commercial membrane properties. . In this study, all MD simulations were performed using LAMMPS. The performance of the modeled PA RO membranes simulated in this study was compared to that of lab-scale SWRO desalination system. Through the simulation, radial distribution, water density and energies has been investigated to understand rejection of RO desalination and particle behavior inside the membrane. Overall, this study demonstrated the usefulness of MD in investigating membrane processes and its potential role in improving desalination performance.
[Section 4]
Recently, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been identified as emerging contaminants of concern in aquatic environments as they can spread antibiotic resistance through horizontal gene transfer among bacterial population. Oxidation processes have been widely used for water disinfection and can be an important barrier for limiting the spread of ARB and ARGs. This study examined the potential of chlorine, ozone, UV, and UV/H2O2 to damage two ARGs, AmpR and KanR, both in extracellular form and present within a host Escherichia coli. An extended amplicon-length quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay was developed to determine ARG damage events. The required oxidant exposures to achieve 3- log inactivation were as followed: O3 < 1 mg/L min for intra and extra ARGs, HOCl > 120 mg/L min for intra, < 40 mg/L min for extra ARGs, UV < 60mJ/cm2 for intra and extra ARGs, UV/H2O2 > 100 mJ/cm2 for intra, <40mJ/cm2 for extra ARGs. This study showed that oxidation processes are effective to prevent proliferation of antibiotic resistance and contribute to improve public health from antibiotic resistance.
[Section 5]
Human drugs are potential toxic agents to aquatic ecosystem due to continuous and large consumption as well as their high biological reactivity. Most drugs have low bioaccumulation and are designed to be well excreted from the body. This property lowers the possibility of side effects to humans; however, some drugs have considerable hydrophobicity and tissue and plasma concentrations which are higher than expected from bioaccumulation research. Propranolol, a widely used β-adrenergic receptor blocker, is one of the compounds containing relatively high log Kow (3.48) and toxicity to invertebrates. Propranolol was found to have a BCF value above 100 ug/L concentration to bivalves and fish. Because long term multi-generation exposure can result in increased body concentrations and also result in differentiated tolerance and effect, whether bioaccumulation of propranolol occurs in non-targeted aquatic organism should be investigated over a long exposure period. This study focuses on studying the potency of toxicity and bioaccumulation of propranolol in multigenerational exposure, including identification of environmentally relevant concentration levels. As a result, consistent significant effects were observed on physiology and behavior and bioaccumulation of proprnaolol in long-term exposure period. This result confirms the previous study’s observation and provides a need for conducting more studies on effect of pharmaceuticals.
