In regards to the insect industry promotive law, this study is aimed at providing the baseline data on insect experience program which is practical for insect farm and learning center. Owing to lack of field experience program in science curriculum, the development in various scientific programs is needed for the regular and supplemental curriculum considering their academic aspects. This study thus developed the educational insect content that focuses on research-and-studying activity, and performed the field demonstration test with it.
In the first year of this research, we developed butterfly and moth learning program and cabbage butterfly rearing program, connecting them to academic curriculums. Also, the programs were examined by field demonstration tests in science halls and elementary schools for 4th to 6th graders of elementary school.
In the second year, we invented the educational program using oriental garden cricket and culture-based stories about singing insects. The program was designed to understand the cultural background and biological knowledge of singing insects, and to build the cage for crickets. The field demonstration tests were conducted in natural history museums and science halls for 2nd to 6th graders of elementary school. In the third year, consumers’ pattern and desire of consumption on educational pet insects were investigated and analyzed by monitoring and surveying regarding the insect learning program. Its field demonstration tests were done by standardized manual of diverse experience programs that directly and indirectly utilize insects. We analyzed the result of surveys and postings on the blogs of portal websites to monitor the educational pet insects market. As a result, consumers’ trend could be detected for understanding the domestic educational pet insects market and having appropriate responses toward consumers.
This research led some publications of books and research articles: “Rearing cabbage butterfly” as an experimental material in elementary science course, “Let’s play and learn with insects” as a manual for hands-on programs using insects, “Effects of Experience-Based Learning Program Using Singing Insects” and “Website Monitoring on the Behavior of Consumers for Educational Pet Insects” as research papers. This study may allow to provide more professional and various insect education programs and year-round experience programs without concerning seasonal limit. Furthermore, use of insects in green tourist industry would activate the local economic and insect industry.
The aim of this study is to develop an insect cage for education for the butterfly and cricket in the classsroom.
Proper insect garden design choice of plants are essential. Such decisions will help influence which insects are attracted, remain in the area, and reproduce there. Suitable habitat also includes shelter from wind and open sunny areas for basking, and mud puddles for water and nutrients.
Recent advances in computer technology have stimulated the use of automatic data acquisition systems based on video techniques. In behavioural neuro sciences in particular, such developments have been timely, generating new opportunities for the design of more sophisticated behavioural assays. A variety of technical solutions for the automatic acquisition of flight paths (tracking systems) have been developed to fulfil the requirements of the specific experimental task.
Much of the research on factors influencing insect flight has focused on species of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, especially beautiful species. Analysis of insect movements in response to physical, and social stimuli is useful in basic and applied research. However, precise recording and analysis of an insect’s path is difficult, particularly if the rate of movement and change in direction are also of interest. An effective tracking system must follow movements on a photographically irregular background and provide real-time analysis and read-out. Additional desirable qualities of a tracking system are high resolution, low cost, easy availability and applicability to many animal species.
Temperature and photometry has a significant impact on the performance of terrestrial ectotherms, the behavior and flight. In particular, small ectotherms like insects are likely to be influenced by fluctuation in temperature because their large surface to volume ratio facilitates a fast heat exchange with the surrounding environment. When temperature rises an insect can increase its level of activity, which enables it to search a larger area and thereby to encounter a higher number of host.
The ultimate aim of this study is to develop an instruction manual for making Premix Instant artificial diet for the caterpillars of Cabbage White butterfly Pieris rapae in the classroom. Cabbage White butterfly is currently used as one of the most popular teaching materials for elementary school children observing the complete life cycle of butterflies and insects in general. Maintaining a healthy rearing condition for culturing this butterfly in the classroom depends critically on the stable supply of high-quality food resources throughout their larval growing stages. Hence, there has been a growing need from both teachers and students for the simple and easy recipes for making a diet that can be readily made in the classroom. To meet this demand, we conducted a series of experimental works in this study to identify the optimal nutritional or growth conditions for Cabbage White caterpillars. According to our results, caterpillars exhibited much better performance with respect to feeding and life-history when fed on the near-natural diet that was made of the lyophilized powder of cruciferous vegetables than on the conventional semi-synthetic diets that are currently used for culturing these caterpillars in the laboratories. When given an opportunity to choose between the two diets, they preferred the near-natural diet to the semi-synthetic one. To determine which cruciferous vegetable is the most suitable food source for Cabbage White caterpillars, we recorded the developmental consequences of caterpillars raised one of three diets, each comprising the lyophilized powder of three different cruifers that are commercially available: Cabbage, Kale, or Broccoli. We also investigated the optimal water content as well as the quantity of antiseptic agents that were to be included for our simple Premix diet. Our results showed that among three food sources, Broccoli turned out to be the nutritionally most suitable source of food for rearing Cabbage White caterpillars and that the ratio of water to dry ingredient that resulted in the best larval performance was 6 to 1. It was confirmed that the addition of an antiseptic agent significantly delayed the emergence of molds and microbes on the food for 48hrs.
Based on these results, we were able to design a complete instruction guide for an easy-made diet Premix Kit for Cabbage White caterpillars in the classroom. The present study will provide an instrumental platform for fostering a variety of teaching programmes using insects and may have implications for rural economies profiting from culturing this butterfly of high educational importance.
