Nnosemosis (Nosemosis apium) is one of the most important parasites of honey bee, a recently described pathogen of Apis mellifera and Apis cerana.. In honey bees, nosemosis (Nosemosis apium) infections are caused by microsporidian species of Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae. Nosemosis symptoms include digestive and absorption disorders because spores damage epithelial tissue of the alimentary canal that is responsible for food absorption. Although fumagillin is the only antibiotic approved for control of nosema disease in honey bees, fumagillin is known to be toxic to mammals and has risk of residues in honey.
Most Korean beekeepers have moved from south to north of Korea to collect nectar from black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) flowers for 2 months. This provided a valuable opportunity to sample bees originating from diverse areas in one location. We initiated a survey of honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies on the blooming period of Acacia to determine the prevalence of Nosema apis from 2012 to 2013. In 2012, Nosema causes significant losses in honey production and decreases the population size of honeybees. Twenty two hives owned by 18 beekeepers were sampled for this study. Bees were collected on the 24th and 25th of May, 2012. Nosema spore counts ranged from zero to 5,266,000 spores per bee. The average number of nosema spores per bee was calculated to be 1, 375,000. Approximately 86% of the apiaries examined were infected with nosema, based on the presence of spores in the flowering period of Acacia. This indicates that nosema is the predominant species affecting honeybee colonies. In 2013, Nosema causes significant losses in population size of honeybees. Sixteenth hives were sampled for this study. Bees were collected on the 4th and 13th of May, 2013. Nosema spore counts ranged from zero to 1,948,333 spores per bee. The average number of nosema spores per bee was calculated to be 450,000. Approximately 94% of the apiaries examined were infected with nosema, based on the presence of spores in the flowering period of Acacia. This indicates that nosema is the predominant species affecting honeybee colonies. In this study, we also has been conducted experiment of reduce production of nosema spores using newly emerged bees that orally inoculated with Nosema ceranae spores. The data shown that medium of cordyceps militaris susceptibily reduced spore production of Nosema cerenae to 1.47% compare with negative control and can be used eco-friendly meterial to control of Nosema cerenae.
Honey production from approximately 1.7 million colonies owned by around 25 thousand Korean beekeepers was almost 38 thousand M/T in 2010. Most Korean beekeepers have moved from south area to north to get Acacia nectar on blossoming season of Acacia for two month. This event provided a valuable opportunity to sample bees originating from diverse areas in one location. In this study we survey of honey bee colonies on blooming period of Acacia to determine the prevalence of virus from 2012 to 2013. To detect virus of honey bee, we collect honey bee sample from various apiaries and performed RT-PCR.
Frist, we designed virus specific primers pairs in conserved regions of the viral genomes in the GenBank database. And then, we confirmed the virus amplicon using cloning and sequence. The distribution patterns of black queen cell virus (BQCV), chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), deformed wing virus (DWV), israel acute paralysis virus (IAPV), Kashmir bee virus (KBV) and sacbrood virus (SBV) were investigated in honey bee samples raised on Korean beekeepers by employing reverse transcription-PCR in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, the most prevalent virus was BQCV, present in 87% of samples, followed by SBV with 82.6%. CBPV was detected in one beekeeper, while DWV, IAPV and KBV were not present in any sample. As a result, infections of BQCV and SBV were simultaneously observed in most colonies. Next year, we also performed to diagnosis of six honeybee viruses using RT-PCR from forty eight hives honey bee samples owned by 16 beekeepers. Among them, four different viruses were detected in samples. BQCV and SBV were present in samples from all. Prevalence of IAPV was 31%. KBV were present in only 6% of the samples. However, CBPV and DWV were not detected in any of samples. It illustrated that BQCV and SBV in virus were the predominant species affecting honeybee colonies.
We has been conducted experiment of reduce production of virus using newly emerged bees that orally inoculated with purified SBV virus. The result was that honey bee immune enhancement that is made of comb extracts of bee hive added vitamin, protein extracts of bee pollen and alkaloid substance of bee pollen was reduced virus expression detected using RT-PCR. Data indicate that defencin, hymenoptaecin, pgrps1 and relishthe genes revels were significantly elevated in the bees treated honey bee immune enhancement. In contrast, immuno deficiency, lysozyme 2 and lysozyme3 genes revels were significantly reduced in the bees treated honey bee immune enhancement.
The high abundance and impact on honeybees of the Asian hornet Vespa velutina var. nigrithorax have caused great concern among Europeanpublic authorities and beekeepers. The species was reported for the first time in France in 2005 and spread out across 66 European district. Its arrival was reported in 2010 in Northern Spain, in 2011 in Portugal and Belgium and in 2013 in Italy. Its wider expansion in Europe is soon to be expected. We discuss here the advances of the collaborative research project initiated in 2008 in France.
1- The potential invasion risk of the species was assessed using modeling tools of climatic suitability. Interestingly, the potential distribution of V. v. nigrithorax matches the current distribution of another invasive social wasp, the German yellow jacket, Vespula germanica.
2- Apart from reported damages on hives, little is known on the biology of V. velutina throughout its native Asian range. In the invaded range, the impact of V. v. nigrithorax on the diversity and biomass of the invertebrate fauna is under study. Preliminary results reported a diversified diet varying among seasons and habitat types.
3- The genetic variability between individuals of V. v. nigrithorax from France and Asia was assessed in order to describe the history of its invasion. The analysis has evidenced a low variability among the invasive population, which indicates a single introduction of one or more queens. The sampling of specimens in France and in the area of origin has beenextended to confirm this hypothesis and the most probable area of origin.
Given the potential economic and biological impact of V. v. nigrithorax, a better understanding of its invasion dynamics is necessary to predict regions at risk, hence to help with planning dedicated control measures, a prerequisite for replacing the reactive nature of current solutions with a proactive, predictive approach.
Since its introduction in France 10 years ago, the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, has rapidly spread to neighbouring countries (Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy and Germany). It showed efficient social traits facilitating its invasive success. Only scarce and incomplete natural history studies were known from its native distribution area. Studying the biology of this species in its invasive distribution range was thus a prerequisite to the implementation of efficient control methods in a near future. During a 3-year field survey, we collected 77 nests to investigate several of the species’ key colony characteristics. Our results enabled us to accurately quantify each of the castes and to better understand their synchronicity throughout the season. Our study showed that mature nests are able to produce up to 13 000 individuals and that the size of mature nests is correlated to the number of individuals produced. This correlation enables the inference of one characteristic from the other. Furthermore, each mature nest can produce up to several hundreds of potential founder queens, a crucial datum in the light of today’s unregulated spring queen trapping control campaigns. In addition, nest dissections enabled to record the incidence of nest relocation for the first time in this species. Results are discussed with regards to what is known in other Vespidae species, with a focus on Vespula species that are known to be invasive in many other countries worldwide.
Following the recent introduction of Vespa velutina into France, an increase in predation on domestic honeybees, Apis mellifera, has resulted from the dispersion of this hornet across the country. We aimed at providing its predation pressure dynamics at bee hives in two sites by using food traps that could be used as a comparison in future years. The number of trapped and chasing hornets in each apiary was correlated. Predation lasted 5 months on our two sites. Predation at bee hives was found to be affected by wind speed and by the seasonal effect of temperature and humidity. We also show that V. velutina queens and males were present during unusual periods in our traps, which may be significant to understanding their life cycle. These results are discussed with reference to the biology of other Vespine species. This study represents the first monitoring of V. velutina predation pressure dynamics in France. It constitutes an initial database for pest management and suggests ways of protecting bee hives.
Vespa velutina is an aggressive predator of honey bees and other beneficial insects. V. velutina has been unintentionally introduced in Busan before 2003 and is currently widely spreading across the country. This hornet is a pest in Korea, because it preys upon domestic honeybees, Apis mellifera and Apis cerana. Beekeeping operations are affected by this predation, with some beekeepers reporting colony losses. Here, the aim was to screen samples of baits (i.e., wine, beer, and pyroligneous liquor) for their repellency attractant wasps in trap. Three bait-traps were tested and compared in order to find the best lure for studying social wasp populations in several cities (Yangsan - 169, Gijang - 207, Gwangyang - 38, and Gokseong - 21) in Korea. V. velutina were trapped for a total of 1,003 specimens in the spring season. The critical life stage to capture is hornet queens as they emerge from hibernation, which is likely to be in late February - March. At the end of hibernation emergent V. velutina queens have a raised energy requirement, and therefore show a preference for foods. Sweet and acidy baits are thus the most effective for the first captures of foundresses. In invaded areas, spring queen trapping using sweet and acidy baits has been promoted by apicultural unions in order to limit V. velutina population expansion.
