This study was conducted to review into various properties of representative jar-coffin tombs in the Yeongsan River basin using natural scientific methods and to establish a database of information about large jar-coffin site. For the study, environmental and locational characteristics of those sites, material characteristics of unearthed jar coffins and characteristics of material provenance around consumption sites were examined in a integrated scientific approach.
First of all, it probably was highly possible that the geomorphological environment of surface of sites where jar-coffin tombs would be made, the order and environment of streams flowing through consumption relics and the altitude environment of surface of sites where jar-coffin tombs would be made were taken into consideration enough to select locations of those tombs in the Yeongsan River basin, according to analyses of geographical features and GIS of research areas. It also is assumed that microtopographical features surface of locations of jar-coffin tombs, the size, distance and relative height of streams related to transport of jar coffins, and the slope environment and direction of surface of locations of jar-coffin tombs affected selection of tomb locations. It was found that the geological environment, the number of streams flowing around consumption relics and directions of those streams didn’t greatly affected selection of tomb locations.
Jar coffins unearthed from Ungokdong, Hwajeongri Masan, Cheongsongri, Bogam-ri and Dasideul in Naju, which are considered as the most important parts in jar-coffin tombs in the Yeongsan River basin, share considerable common features in terms of physical science, microscopy, mineralogy and geochemistry. Most of them contain a lot of stratified mica, quartz and orthoclase. Sample cores of jar coffins unearthed from tombs in Hwajeong-ri Masan and Cheongsong-ri don’t contain stratified mica, showing small differences in chemical composition. Deepen case studies should be conducted about this. According to this study, jar-coffin tombs in the Yeongsan River basin don’t have distinct local colors except main areas of Naju and each relic shows various features, respectively. Each of remains in Jangdeung, Songwol-dong and Jangdong-ri of Naju and jar coffins in Haenam areas showed clear characteristics one and another.
The firing temperature of jar coffins in the Yeongsan River basin ranged from 700 to 1,150℃ and most of jar coffins unearthed from main areas of Naju, including tombs in Ungok-dong, were coffin fragments fire in 1,050∼1,150℃. Sample cores of jar coffins found in Bannam of Naju and Yeongam areas also had a large number of pottery coffin fragments fire in 1,050∼1,150℃. On the other hand, no jar coffins fire in 1,050℃ or higher were found in other areas, excluding tombs in Cheongsuwon. In addition, soil surveys were executed about four districts of the Yeongsan River basin, or Sijong-myeon in Yeongam, Bannam-myeong in Naju and Muan and Hampyeong areas. According to the surveys, soil of Yeongam, Naju and Muan had same fragments and mineralogical features of related sites, showing a necessity to discuss the possibility that material provenance existed in those areas.
