1. Breeding of strawberry for high yield and the long-term harvest
In order to select excellent cross parents for development new cultivar of low temperature tolerant, combining ability was conducted by 24 cross combinations obtained from crosses between 'Dahong', 'Gamhong', 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang' of domesitc cultivars as seed parents and 'Dahong', 'Gamhong', 'Maehyang', 'Sugyeong', 'Sunhong', 'Wongyo 3111' as pollen parents. The results showed that two cultivars of 'Dahong', 'Gamhong' were not suitable for seed parents. Because average fruit weight in case of 'Dahong' as a seed parent was the tendency to become the smallest in total cross combinations, survival ratio in case of 'Gamhong' as a seed parent was the lowest in total cross combinations.
And fruit hardness in case of 'Sunhong' as a pollen parent was the tendency to low, incidence of malformed fruit in case of 'Sugyeong' as a pollen parent was the tendency to be increased. Therefore, two cultivars of 'Sunhong', 'Sugyeong' was also not suitable for pollen parents. But In case of 'Maehyang' and 'Seolhyang' as seed parents, germination percent and survival rate were relatively higher than other seed parents, fruit quality and yield had also excellent. Therefore, there could be selected to 'Maehyang' and 'Seolhyang' as seed parents and 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', 'Wongyo3111' as pollen parents. Especially, the crosses 'Maehyang' × 'Seolhyang', 'Seolhyang' × 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang' × 'Wongyo3111' were suitable for cross combination for development new cultivar of low temperature tolerant to be demonstrated the excellence as cross parents in sugar contents, fruit weight, fruit hardness and yield.
2. Breeding of strawberry for early forcing culture
In order to breed of new variety for early forcing culture, we had planted 32,161 individual plants in 205 cross combinations for 5 years from 2011 to 2015 and selected 844 individual plants among these plants. 13 lines were selected out of cross combinations in 2011 as elite lines with early flowering and high fruit quality, then 2 lines were selected among those 13 lines after examining their characteristics and productivity from 2013 to 2014. farmer’s field trial of 2 lines was conducted in 2015 and they were registered as ‘Aram’ and ‘Hongsil’ thereafter.
In order to breed of new variety with powdery mildew resistance, 2 lines with low Incidence of powdery mildew were selected among 10 lines after examining their characteristics and productivity from 2013 to 2014. farmer’s field trial of 2 lines was conducted in 2015 and they were registered as ‘Geumhwa’ and ‘Eunhwa’ thereafter.
3. Breeding of Strawberry for semi-forcing culture
This study was conducted to breed strawberry with high hardness for export from 2011 to 2015. Domestic and Japan cultivars were used mostly for cross combinations and USA cultivars were used to promote firmness and yield.
72 cross combinations were made and 18,610 seed propagated plants were planted during project period. 208 lines were selected among them and 1 line was finally registered in October 2015 as a named “Sukhyang”. “Sukhyang” has characteristics of high hardness and big fruit size, and is suitable for semi-forcing culture. Currently, “Sukhyang” is being tesed in farmers. After the sale of the right to a variety “Sukhyang” is scheduled.
4. Breeding of Strawberry for high fimness for export
To vitalize the breeding program horticulture industry, which has the highest competitiveness in the strawberry industrial sector, it is necessary to establish a comprehensive plan to strategically promote the specialized cultivars strawberry industry with advantages compared to other regions based on the foundation to produce new variety and research infrastructure in the region.
In order to breed new high firmness fruit cultivar for export strawberry, We made cross some combinations for hardness fruit. Our team made cross with korean varieties and Europe, USA, etc.
New cultivars Fragaria × ananassa ‘Honeybell’, ‘Berrystar’ were selected out of cross combinations in 2009, Which were tested characteristics from 2010 to 2014. The principal characteristics of new cultivars were as follows;
‘Honeybell’ is a new cultivar came from the combination that ‘Seulhyang’ crossed to ‘Ssnata’ and it had a semiforce flowering type.
Another new variety of strawberry(Fragaria × ananassa) ‘Berrystar’ was selected out of cross combinations in 2010, which was tested characteristics from 2011 to 2014. ‘Berrystar’ came from the combination that 'Ssanta' crossed to ‘07-S-28’. It has characteristics high firmness fruit fresh and good taste. Also, ‘Berrystar’ has the powdery mildew disease resistance comparison cultivar and has plant vigorous to the end harvest time. The yearly mean yields of fruit is about 3,934 kg/10a, which is more than that of ‘Ssanta’ as comparison cultivar.
5. Breeding of Ever-bearing Strawberry for Summer Culture
‘Gwanha’, ‘Yeolha’, ‘Jangha’, and 'Muha' are new strawberry(Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivar, which was released by Highland Agriculture of Research Center, RDA, in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. This cultivars showed excellent ever-bearing characteristics including continuous flowering habit and high yield under high temperature and long-day condition.
It was named ‘Saebong No. 4, 5, 6, and 7’ as line name after examining the characteristic and productivity in summer culture from 2011 to 2015. Again, after two regional adaptability test from 2011 to 2015, the cultivar name, ‘Gwanha’, ‘Yeolha’, ‘Jangha’, and ‘Muha’ were imposted on this cultivar. 'Gwanha' is suitable for four season cultivation as an ornamental strawberry cultivar because it shows continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature condition. ‘Yeolha’ is suitable for four season cultivation as a high harvesting cultivar because it shows continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature condition. ‘Jangha’ is suitable for four season cultivation as a high soluble solids contents cultivar because it shows continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature condition. ‘Muha’ is suitable for four season cultivation as a high hardness cultivar because it shows continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature condition.
6. Breeding of strawberry for the cross combination between the inbred lines
‘Seeberry’ is F1short-dayhybridcultivarcultivateforseedinstrawberry,whichwasreleasedby the Protected Horticulture Experiment Station (RDA, Republic of Korea) in 2013. Since 2004, breeding inbred lines using domestic germplasms and selecting varieties with excellent characteristics has led to the development of this cultivar. ‘Seeberry’ originated from a cross of two inbred lines: a male ‘Wongyo 3115’ parent with high firmness characteristics crossed with a female ‘Wongyo 3116’ parent with excellent fruit shape and high yield among these inbred lines. ‘Seeberry’ cultivar should grow a crown diameter to be over 10 mm for characteristics of its own. ‘Seeberry’ has an upright plant shape with elliptic leaves, 12–15 flowers per cluster, weak vigorous growth habit, middle flower bud differentiation compared to vegetative propagation individuals. Fruits of ‘Seeberry’ are conical type having a light skin color and approximately 15-16g in an average weight. Yield of this cultivar has a tendency to be 92% lower than that of the control cultivar ‘Akihime’, but ‘Seeberry’ has excellent taste, sugar content of 9.7 °Bx, acidity of 0.6%, and abundant texture. With regards to disease and pest resistance, ‘Seeberry’ has a tendency to be sensitive to powdery mildew, aphids, and the two-spotted spider mite, but is not strongly sensitive to anthracnose.
7. Development of early selection technology and the breeding efficiency
To improve germination rate of hard seed of strawberry, NaOCl treatment improved the uniformity and speed of germination, but it showed a tendency to decrease the germination rate at high concentration of NaOCl. Also, Interaction effects between cold storage at 2℃ for 10days and NaOCl treatment of strawberry seed showed significantly higher germination rate than those that stored at room temperature.
With regard to development of index for selection associated with high yield in forcing cultivation of strawberry, it was expected to increase the efficiency when focused on 2nd fruit of 1st flower cluster and 1st or 2nd fruit of 2nd flower cluster rather than 1st fruit of 1st flower cluster of seedlings originated from crossings. It is expected to select good seedlings having salt tolerance when screening the seedlings after EC 3dS/m level treatment for 30 days due to check the big differences of growth among seedlings. When germplasm and seedlings of strawberry treated cold (5℃) and heat (30℃), the total fresh weight is correlated with number of leaves (0.84), number of primary roots (0.73), crown diameter (0.61) and root length (0.56). Therefore, it is expected to determine the cold and heat tolerance based on the number of leaves as a non-destructive indicator.
The seedlings of strawberry selected about 30% level in the seedling stage by treatment with a slightly lower concentration of 1 × 103 ~ 104 spores/ml level of anthracnose, and horticultural traits like the fruit quality were evaluated. It is expected to be applied in the strawberry anthracnose resistance breeding program. In addition, high strength level of selection during the seedlings of strawberry showed a tendency to increase the disease resistance to powdery mildew, anthracnose with increase of yield. So, it is important to expand the size of seedlings of strawberry as many as possible and select seedlings with high strength during seedling stages before transplanting for evaluating horticultural traits. It is expected to be applied to the development of disease resistant varieties with excellent horticultural traits like high yield based on the results of basic research carried out in this project.
