The Korea Nurses' Health Study (KNHS) is the first large-scale cohort investigating the health of women in South Korea. The design and the questionnaires are similar to the Nurses' Health Study 3 conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health. The KNHS started in March of 2013 with four months of preparation including translation of questionnaires and a pilot test. The survey was distributed starting in July 2013, and the entry period is for three years (2013-2015) and consists of a cross-sectional baseline survey. During the entry period, female nurses were asked to participate every 6 months for 4 different modules. Also, if a participant becomes pregnant during her participation, she is asked to take the early-pregnancy (module 5) and post-pregnancy(module 6) modules. In this case, a participant will partake in the total of 6 modules.
The primary purpose of the KNHS was to investigate health conditions, life styles, health behaviors, and diseases of female nurses who are of childbearing age. The secondary purposes was to investigate occupational health including work schedule, working conditions, work-related stress, and occupational hazardous exposures. Recruitment was done by the Korean Nurses Association. The study population was targeted for female registered nurses whose ages were between 20 and 44, women of childbearing age living in Korea. Data collection was the focus of the first and the second year of the entry period whereas the data analysis and investigation were the main focus on the third year. The total number of study participants in each module are 20,613(module1), 14,060(module2), 6,818(module3), 1,690(module4), and 1,803 for modules 5 & 6. Module 1 has reached its target number and is closed whereas all the other modules are open for continuous participations.
Using the baseline data, the research team has investigated the association between depression and shift work as well as association between depression and eating disorders (night eating syndrome and binge eating). Additional findings include occupational hazardous exposures, fatigue in relation to wor-related characteristics, myoma uteri in relation to body size and BMI, and more. The KNHS is looking forward to explore the broader spectrum of women's health, and in relation to the context of nurses' lives, to increase awareness and provide baseline data for policy application.
