The purpose of this research project is to develop a housing model for the people with vision loss to live their lives more independently by themselves or with their families.
For this research project, first we reviewed previous research regarding the disabled and their environment, especially for a variety of housing types based on various users.
Second, we investigated the needs and requirements of visually impaired people in their housing and state of social supporting services regarding chores and housing repairs and preventive maintenance.
Third, we identified what kinds of problems exists when people with vision impaired experience in their houses in terms of space layout, interior materials, furnitures, equipment, housing features and structures. The most common hazard found in the homes include inadequate lighting, level differences in living areas, unsafe/insecure floor surface, staircases with no railings, poorly designed or arranged furniture, poorly designed tubs, toilets and fixtures on the bathroom, confined space and lack of storages and etc..
Next we reviewed guidelines and regulations for people with vision impaired or the disabled in general and have developed guidelines for new construction or renovation, refurbishment of housing for the people with vision impaired.
Finally we have developed housing models which can be applied to small size unit in social housing, complex housing, and single house or multifamiles settings.
For the development of guidelines and housing models, we aim to develop more inclusive and universal environment that aims to assist use by everyone, regardless of age, gender or disability. The emphasis is on maximizing functional vision and on minimizing barriers and risk by achieving specific design and specification requirements. The housing model developed from this research include physical structure, space layout, design principles and related alternative services from social supporting systems.
The development of guidelines and housing models can contribute to quality of life for the disabled and their families and to welfare of society in large. The improvement of the living environment can help increase the ability to accomplish activities of daily living, promote safety, and reduce the risk of home accidents.
