The original goal of this project is to focus on ‘cosmic radiation safety management of an aircraft crew on the polar route’, but there are no big difference between polar route and the other routes in their radiation doses. Then we expand our research to the general management of radiation safety for all the crew. According to reports from Space Weather Workshop held in 2009 in the United States, compared to atomic-related workers to the annual radiation dose is 1.87 mSv and medical radiation workers are exposed to 0.75 mSv, flight attendants are exposed to 3.07 mSv.
The crew for the radiation dosage has a direct impact on health is debatable. In addition, atomic and medical workers, and by the incident radiation can affect health directly be exposed to large amounts of radiation, while for the flight crew, it is impossible to exceed the amount of radiation over a certain value. Nevertheless, the International Commission Radiation Protection (ICRP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) require a systematic management of radiation for the flight crew and, in many countries, including Europe, radiation safety measures for the crew are managed. In Korea, ‘Living Environment Radiation Control Bill’ pending in the Congress trying to come, the bill for the flight crew safety managementand regulatory measures are needed. In this study, we would like to suggest the following action plan related to manage the radiation safety of the crew.
(1) The radiation management for the crew applies only to international flights.
(2) Use the program to calculate the annual radiation dose of all the crew members.
(3) Airlines should provide the material if the crew want to look at the information on their radiation exposure and preserve that for a period of time.
(4) Airlines have to manege that the annual radiation dosage of the crew should not exceed 6 mSv.
(5) Airlines should do action right after they are aware that stewardess is pregnant, such as working on the ground, or a domestic flight to minimize their radiation dose.
(6) Airlines should explain to the crew on the potential impact of radiation on the human body.
(7) Additional safety measures for passengers do not be required, but airlines have to inform the expected radiation for the passenger's flight through the web site.
(8) Airlines should try to minimize the radiation exposure by using all the available methods from the sun, such as space weather forecasting information.
(9) The government have to perform the investigation and analysis of the cosmic radiation through professional research institution.
