In recent years, 3D printing has been expected to be one of the promising future technologies, along with big data, Internet of things, driverless cars, etc. President Obama pointed out, at the State of the Union Address in 2013, that 3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make virtually everything and restore the manufacturing competitiveness of America. The Korean government also provided national initiative for 3D printing and manufacturing innovation in 2014. However, the optimistic perspective of 3D printing is changing. Gartner predicted that consumer 3D printing is approximately 5 to 10years away from mainstream adoption.
The purpose of the research is to answer questions such as "Does 3D printing have the potential to revolutionize most manufacturing industries?" and "Is the Korean government on the right track?" The research focuses on major manufacturing industries, including electronics and automobiles.
Among different types of 3D printing, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM),Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) are the most popular. In FDM, a plastic or wax material is extruded through a nozzle that traces the part's cross sectional geometry layer by layer. Stereolithography (SLA) uses a low-power, highly focused UV laser to trace out successive cross-sections of a three-dimensional object in a vat of liquid photosensitive polymer. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) uses a moving laser beam to trace and selectively sinter powdered polymer and/or metal composite materials into successive cross-sections of a three-dimensional part.
The main aspects of 3D printing are the following. First, the surface quality and strength of the 3D-printed objects are low compared to other manufacturing technologies, such as injection molding, etc. Second, 3D printing can manufacture structurally complex objects with almost no additional costs. Third, the available materials for 3D printing are, though increasing, confined to plastics and some metals. Titanium, which is hardly manufactured through other manufacturing technologies, can be used for 3D printing. Fourth, the low speed of 3D printers is the biggest hurdle for mass production. Fifth, anyone can manufacture objects using 3D printing without proficient know-hows or initial costs.
The effects of 3D printing on industries and the economy are expected to lower the barriers of production for individuals and small enterprises, implementing customization, facilitating product innovations, shortening product development cycles, reducing the need for inventory, eliminating loction limitations of production, etc. In short, 3D printing cannot manufacture objects that existing manufacturing technologies can make more efficiently, but it can make objects that other manufacturing technologies cannot. In other words, 3D printing is not a substitute but rather a complement to other manufacturing technologies.
The survey conducted on 3D printing experts reveals that they expect the following scenarios improbable; "Most households will have their own 3D printers and personally make various goods (tableware, small furniture, etc) using them"; "Consumers will make their smartphones as a whole for use with 3Dprinters" or "Consumers will make and assemble some modules of their smartphones (chips, batteries, antennas, etc) for use with 3D printers";"Smartphone manufacturers will use 3D printing for manufacturing final products(parts or the whole products)"; "Consumers will make their automobiles as a whole for use with 3D printers" or "Consumers will make and assemble some modules of their automobiles (bodies, chassis, etc) for use with 3D printers";"Automobile manufacturers will use 3D printing for manufacturing final products(parts or the whole products). The main reasons for these predictions are the low surface quality and strength of the 3D-printed objects and the low productivity.
However, 3D printing does have the potential to create disruptive innovations.New or existing manufacturers should explore killer applications for 3D printing. Candidates would be module-based smartphones, innovative case design, customized accessories or wearable devices or automobile parts, innovative automobile structures, etc.
It is not quite possible that the competitive landscape of major manufacturing industries will change. However, manufacturers should pursue in-house R&D, collaboration, M&A, technical standardization, and smart factory setup to seize the opportunities offered by 3D printing. New business models such as manufacturing services are particularly promising.
Policy suggestions are the following. First, the strategic orientation should change from extensive support to selective concentration. The process for regular reassessment of new technologies should be established. Second, R&D activities should be applications-oriented (focusing on major industries such as electronics and automobiles) and package-type (tightly linking 3D printers, materials and software). Third, 3D printers and manufacturing services should be provided for entrepreneurs by the government. Events for exploring innovative uses of 3Dprinting, such as the ARPA-E 'LITECAR Challenge', should also be arranged. Finally, regulations regarding the fair use of 3D printing should be established.
