Ⅱ. Purpose and necessity for technology development · For success of aging-friendly business, it is important, among other things, products should be acceptable enough to be usable by the older people as well as by people of different generations and lifestyles. · UD is a new conceptual paradigm that is very helpful to facilitate those kind of products. It has been widely known in Korea entering the 21st century. · In particular, there has been few researches or development cases concering outdoor sports facilities and physical exercise equipments. · Thus we set the ultimate purpose for integrated research task as making environment-friendly outdoor sports facilities and exercise equipment as high value-added business technology capitalizing on UD based on aging -friendly perspective. · The goal of the first year in the stage of basic study and conceptual design is to determine the direction for aging-friendly UD.
Ⅲ. Contents and methods for technology development · To achieve the first year goal "Design direction for aging friendly UD", we categorized our studies into six parts. · First, we captured principles and components of environment/product design for the older people by surveying documentary materials and case studies. · Secondly, we captured planning elements for aging friendly UD of outdoor exercise environment/facility/exercise equipments by investigating the needs of exercisers at sites where outdoor exercise facilities are installed. · Thirdly, We investigated exemplar cases at home and abroad, analized the characteristics from the perspective of UD and caught up elements that can be used in developing outdoor exercise environment/facility/equipment. · Fourthly, we surveyed the existing local outdoor exercise environment/facility/equipment from the perspective of UD.and caught up elements that can be used in developing outdoor exercise environment/facility/equipment. · Fifthly, we developed aging-friendly UD design guidelines utilizing those elements captured in the preceding process. · Sixly, we developed conceptual design solutions for outdoor exercise environment/facility/equipment with the aging-friendly UD design guidelines based on the user-centered approach.
Ⅳ. Outcome of research and development · We built up 11 design elements that will compensate for decline of capabilities with age and 14 features and comparative elements of children playing facility/product to utilize them in developing design guidelines for outdoor exercise environment and exercise equipment. · We interviewed 995 physical exercisers who were using 19 kinds of outdoor exercise machines in 11 locations in Seoul and 37 items of demands(399cases) on outdoor facility and environment and 10 items of demands on outdoor exercise equipments. · We also utilized planning elements by analyzing 5 outdoor environments, 5 exercise facilities and 10 exercise equipments to develop design guidelines. · We used self-made UD checklists to investigate current status and utilized 38 facility environment items and 63 exercise equipment items to develop design guidelines. · UD design guidelines have been developed in two categories; one for exercise facility environment and the other for exercise equipment. The former comprises layout/landscape/movement line/scale/management plan and the outdoor space and indoor space both in the facility. · The latter comprises guidelines based on use stage and physical parts and 7 kinds of exercise machines. · We developed conceptual designs utilizing contents in 12 outdoor environments and the already-developed UD design guidelines.
Ⅴ.Plan for utilizing the outcome of research and development · The development of design guidelines enables us to make diverse contents on landscape, architecture and exercise equipments. Such contents can be applied tailor-made to spatial characteristics and environmental conditions and be utilized in program for inducing residents' participation in the housing block development. · The design guidelines developed in the first year period will be utilized for developing aging-friendly/interface design/high value-added sensitivity design.
