This study aims to diagnose the current state of interdisciplinary learning in institutions for gifted and talented education (“G/T education”) and propose ways to raise the quality of G/T education through interdisciplinary learning. To provide a background for the discussion of interdisciplinary learning, this study first looks into current backdrop of the features of the “creation economy” society and the 4th industrial revolution. Then, it examines South Korea’s distinctive social and cultural characteristics and its educational landscape centered around entrance examinations. It was found that despite the changing educational paradigms and portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster in line with the times, the socio-cultural importance of academic degrees and the educational landscape defined by entrance examinations greatly inhibit changes from being made in education toward interdisciplinary learning.
The emphasis on interdisciplinary learning is related to the change in the portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster. The future society calls for innovative leaders that have been fostered through G/T education; becoming a high-level expert in one particular field is no longer enough. Based on the existing discourse on innovative leaders, this study found three qualities that interdisciplinary learning aims to foster: “[innovative] intelligence that surpasses intellectual intelligence,” “pure outsider with perseverance and passion,” and “innovative and entrepreneurial leadership.” This study also suggests that there are four quadrants of interdisciplinary learning: 1. convergence within the humanities and social sciences, 2. humanities and social sciences converged with natural sciences/engineering, 3. convergence within natural sciences/engineering, 4. natural sciences/engineering converged with humanities and social sciences.
Interdisciplinary learning has been taking place under a vague notion of the concepts behind it. It can be said that attempts at interdisciplinary learning have been limited to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) education, as if STEAM comprised the entirety. In this study, the concept of convergence found in existing studies, the definition of convergence in convergence studies, and the definitions of convergence in interdisciplinary learning were analyzed and three common elements were found: 1.at least two subjects, 2. associations across the subjects, 3. solutions for complex real-life issues, topics and problems. The analysis led to the formation of the following definition of interdisciplinary learning.
“Interdisciplinary learning is education that uses the knowledge, techniques, tools, research methods, insights, and perspectives of two or more (academic) subjects to solve problems or produce creative outputs, individually or collectively, through a deep understanding of the phenomenon or by finding new associations.”
In this study, in-depth interviews and surveys were conducted on students and faculty at schools for gifted and talented students (“G/T schools”) in order to analyze the actual state of interdisciplinary learning and identify areas for improvement.
With respect to the goals of G/T education, G/T schools have functioned to provide a special type of education that incubates special students who would have had a hard time adjusting in conventional schools. As the number of G/T schools began to grow in 2010, however, the goals and identity of G/T education as a form of special education have been becoming unclear.
When asked about their expectations for G/T education when they entered G/T school,G/T students had the highest expectations for in-depth learning in mathematics and science as well as intellectual stimulation through exchanges with other outstanding students.
The extent to which such expectations were met was also quite high. In contrast, students’high expectations (4.35 points) for receiving a research-oriented education rather than a college-preparatory education resulted in a relatively low satisfaction level (3.71 points). Meanwhile, the expectation that G/T education would be advantageous for college admissions (4.0 points) was met with considerable satisfaction (3.94 points).
The students who attend G/T schools can generally be divided into two groups: the naturally gifted and those who were trained to be gifted. In the case of the former, these students not only showed a lack in self-initiated learning capacity, but also tended not to perform as well as their peers as they progressed through school. On the other hand, naturally gifted students exhibited strong self-motivation in learning and persistence in finding answers. For example, they would conduct experiments in the lab outside of their normal classes simply for the sake of satisfying their own intellectual curiosities and not due to pressure from someone else. These students also showed greater interest in finding underlying principles that could integrate facts rather than focusing on facts in and of themselves.
In the field itself, G/T education has been recognized to be divided into 1. convergence of concepts (between academic disciplines), and 2. network convergence (between people). At the high school level, fostering interdisciplinary minds through convergence between people was deemed as the appropriate overall objective of interdisciplinary learning.
Opinions were collected from the field on appropriate approaches to interdisciplinary learning and they can be summarized into the following five principles. 1. An appropriate balance of in-depth education and interdisciplinary learning is needed (e.g. spider web analogy). 2. The depth of convergence is determined by the depth of the knowledge base.
2-1. Convergence is possible when one has an in-depth understanding of all the fields that are being converged. 2-2. Meaningful convergence is possible when one has thorough knowledge and understanding of at least of the fields being converged, so that the field serves as an axis. 2-3. Meaningful convergence can be achieved even with little knowledge of a field, as long as one is able to see things that could not have been seen before.
3. A natural approach through the discovery process is needed. 4. Students need to be given the opportunity the discover and experience connections between their lives and academic subjects. 5. Opportunities for a wide range of experiences that can serve as a basis for convergence need to be provided. 6. Convergence is not something that is taught but learned through experience.
This study also examined the attempts at interdisciplinary learning as found in curriculums, dividing them into regular subjects, interdisciplinary subjects, research activities, humanities and arts education, and club activities. Then, interdisciplinary subjects, which have been developed and offered in various forms in G/T schools since 2011, were divided into the following six categories. 1. Interdisciplinary subjects based on real issues in society(e.g. law - science, urban planning - environment), 2. Interdisciplinary subjects based on fields that have already been established as interdisciplinary (e.g. nuclear physics, biochemistry), 3. Interdisciplinary studies based on core concepts of the subject (e.g. beautiful biochemistry, convergence@mathematics), 4. Interdisciplinary subjects where the actualization of theories and utilization in the real world act as mediums (e.g. invention and entrepreneurship), 5. Interdisciplinary subjects where enhanced thinking skills are emphasized (e.g. creative thinking). 6. Interdisciplinary subjects composed of special lectures and experiential activities (e.g. creative convergence lectures, exploration).
Interdisciplinary learning that is being provided in classes for the gifted at elementary and middle schools can be divided into four categories based on the following descriptions.
1. Lined-up subjects, 2. Experiential learning through camps and contests, special lectures, etc. 3. Topic-centered research projects, 4. Convergence of topic and contents (convergence of subjects, convergence within subjects). In particular, Category 2 (experiential learning through camps and contests, special lectures, etc.) is similar to Category 6 of G/T schools.
Category 4 (convergence of topic and contents) is similar to Category 3 of G/T schools.
Moreover, Category 3 (topic-centered research projects) is comparable to interdisciplinary curriculums in G/T schools centered on research activities.
Students were asked to assess the cultural and physical environment through which interdisciplinary learning was carried out in their schools. They gave high ratings in class culture (4.28 points), peer culture (4.12 points), and physical environment (4.16 points).
In contrast, teacher-student relations received a relatively low rating (3.78 points). The area with the lowest rating concerned students feeling pressure in their studies (3.68 points).
To be specific, students felt the most burden from performance assessments and projects(3.97 points), which is directly related to their grades, and from tests and grades in and of itself (3.92 points). This suggests that students in G/T schools have high academic stress, feeling a lot of pressure to get good grades in particular.
Issues related to instructors were highlighted as a difficult aspect in implementing interdisciplinary learning. Areas in the instructor training stages that need improvement were raised, as well as ideas to enhance current instructors’ capacities in interdisciplinary learning. Organizational issues in schools that could inhibit interdisciplinary learning were also spotted.
With the larger aim of proposing ways to ensure the effectiveness of interdisciplinary learning, this study also examined college universities’ stance on interdisciplinary learning and their evaluation of G/T schools. First, universities found that students from G/T schools entered into university already exhausted from excessive academic stress from college entrance examinations and competitive environment in high school to get good grades.
In other words, they lacked the type of motivation, passion, and vigor that universities find important. Second, in terms of research activities and other projects being conducted at G/T schools, it was hard to find genuine research studies that were heavily influenced by self-directed learning and self-initiative. Third, when compared to students from public and private high schools, G/T students actually exhibited less “freedom in thinking,” which is fundamental to creative thinking.
This study proposes five ways to improve the quality of G/T education through interdisciplinary learning, as follows. 1. Redefine interdisciplinary learning and reestablish the portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster. 2. Reconfigure the educational curriculum and spaces used in interdisciplinary learning. 3. Address policy support and administrative support through interdisciplinary learning. 4. Lay out a cultural basis for interdisciplinary learning. 5. Offer suggestions for improving interdisciplinary learning in Gifted Education Centers and classes for the gifted at elementary and middle schools.
1. Establish a portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster and reestablish the concept of interdisciplinary learning
Proposal 1-1: Establish a portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster
- From a high-level expert in one field to an innovative leader
The type of leader that the future society is in need of and is seeking to foster through G/T education is changing from that of a high-level expert in one field to an innovative leader who can discover and identify problems in society and play a leading role in finding and implementing appropriate solutions. Rooted in an in-depth understanding of his own field of expertise, the innovative leader needs to be able to connect ideas from various academic disciplines to come up with solutions. When working with other people, the innovative leader must have strong communication and collaboration skills as well. Such skills are grounded in fundamental character traits such as a proper understanding of self, a strong sense of identity, and respect for others. This suggests that the innovative leader needs to be equipped with the right social and personal traits on top of cognitive capacity.
Proposal 1-2: Reconfigure the concept of interdisciplinary learning
- From STEAM education to Interdisciplinary Learning (ID)
Interdisciplinary learning in South Korea has been taking place under the framework of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) and mostly centered around mathematics and science. There seems to be an unspoken rule that at least two of five courses must be integrated in order for it to be considered “interdisciplinary.”Interdisciplinary learning needs to expand beyond mathematics and science, covering courses in all areas. Moreover, interdisciplinary learning needs to include research methods and techniques, insight and perspectives from various fields--not just knowledge.
2. Reconfigure the curriculum and spaces at G/T schools for interdisciplinary learning
Proposal 2-1: Devise a strategy to implement a curriculum for interdisciplinary learning in G/T education
- Enhance convergence-based education
- Balance interdisciplinary learning and in-depth learning: expand interdisciplinary learning
- Be open about various combinations
- Enhance interdisciplinary learning through arts education
- Encourage more club activities
Successful interdisciplinary learning in G/T education requires an enhancement of convergence-based education. Basic refinement education in humanities and arts courses outside of mathematics and science needs to be enhanced. More weight needs to be placed on interdisciplinary learning in the broader curriculum, and interdisciplinary elements should be emphasized in research activities. Various platforms for interdisciplinary learning must be provided, as they can be applied differently depending on the recipients and context of education. In order to enhance humanities and arts education through convergence-based education, both formal and informal measures that can be employed in the educational process should be considered. Lastly, more club activities should be encouraged so that students can gain a broader understanding of people and have more opportunities to practice communication and collaboration.
Proposal 2-2: Arrange spaces for interdisciplinary learning in G/T education
- Separate spaces for convergence: Creative Convergence Room, studios
- Space arrangements: Sejong Academy of Science and Arts
- Space for positive surplus
G/T schools need to think about securing and arranging spaces for interdisciplinary learning. Students need open spaces like seminar rooms and study rooms where they can work together on projects and research activities. They also need workrooms and labs where they can materialize theoretical ideas.
3. Policy support and administrative support for interdisciplinary learning
Proposal 3-1: Fostering and training instructors in interdisciplinary learning in G/T education
- Develop and offer courses on interdisciplinary learning in education colleges
- Set up an interdisciplinary learning department in each school
- Conduct more teacher training in interdisciplinary learning
The success of interdisciplinary learning is closely linked to the instructor’s relevant capacities. In order to properly establish interdisciplinary learning in schools as preparation for the future and not as a temporary trend, the ways in which instructors are fostered and trained need to be changed. First, courses on interdisciplinary education should be developed for education colleges so that prospective instructors can be exposed to interdisciplinary learning from the early stages of their professional education. Second, each school should set up their own “Interdisciplinary Learning Department” and appoint someone to head the department so that interdisciplinary learning is adequately reflected in the school’s curriculum. Third, instructors should be given more opportunities to receive training in interdisciplinary learning.
Proposal 3-2: G/T education and college entrance examinations: Special education vs. top-notch education
- Signals for G/T schools concerning college admissions: Changes in admissions criteria and methods to evaluate genuine research capacities
- Improve methods used to evaluate academic performance
G/T education should be free from college entrance examinations. Members of G/T schools recognize academic grades as the most important standard for college admissions.
Colleges and universities need to reduce the weight they place on grades and come up with new standards to evaluate candidates based on their research and investigative capacities. Universities should cultivate an environment where G/T students can not only receive in-depth education in mathematics and science, but also freely engage in a variety of investigative activities through interdisciplinary courses and research activities. To this end, universities need to send signals that reflect this in their admissions criteria. The system used to evaluate academic performance in G/T schools needs to be improved.
The academic performance evaluation system should be changed from the current 13 step relative (knowledge-based subjects) and absolute (interdisciplinary and experimental, arts and physical education subjects) evaluation to a 3-5 step evaluation, while qualitative standards for G/T students’ accomplishments need to be enhanced.
4. Lay out a cultural basis for interdisciplinary learning
Proposal 4-1: Lay out a cultural basis for interdisciplinary learning in G/T education
- Strengthen relations between school members: Cultivate a safe psychological environment through individual monitoring and counseling
- Greater tolerance of failure
- Foster open minds: Secure a diverse student body during admissions, increase engagement with students from unique schools
- Positive surplus (freedom)
There should be more individual monitoring and counseling for students in order to cultivate a safe psychological environment where students are free to explore and investigate.
Also, a high tolerance of failure helps stimulate the development of creative and interdisciplinary thinking skills in students. To help students have open minds, G/T schools should consider the diversity of the school body as an important factor when reviewing candidates for admission. Schools should also engage more with schools that are different from themselves. Lastly, students should be given the freedom to ask questions on their own and think for themselves (positive surplus).
5. Suggestions for improving interdisciplinary learning in Gifted Education Centers and classes for the gifted at elementary and middle schools
Proposal 5-1: Improve interdisciplinary learning in Gifted Education Centers and classes for the gifted at elementary and middle schools
- Enhance capacities for creativity, passion, motivation, communication and collaboration through interdisciplinary learning
- Expand outside of STEAM education towards various fields
- Emphasize interdisciplinary learning through projects and research activities
- Develop programs for interdisciplinary learning and enhance professional expertise of faculty in this area
