Widespread loss of biodiversity calls for the establishment of conservation priorities concentrated on species-rich areas or habitats. A critical component of conservation strategies is to give conservation priority to highly diverse areas in terms of species richness, endangerment, rarity, and endemism. In previous study from 2010 to 2012 by NIER, biodiversity hotspots considering species richness, rarity was analyzed. But the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey was conducting, so partial data was used for the study. So it needs to be analyzed hotspots using the whole 3rd National Ecosystem Survey data.
There is now ample evidence that modern climate change is reshuffling the geographic distributions of flora and fauna species. The best way to conserve biodiversity is to predict hotspots shift and make strategy to conserve it. But it‘s very difficult and complex to consider environmental variables of flora and fauna simultaneously. Especially, climate has long been identified as a primary control on the geographic distribution of plants.
Therefore, plant species may be expected to exhibit marked redistributions in response to climate change.
In this study, we analyzed biodiversity hotspots in South Korea and predicted range shifts of flora under climate change.
To analyze biodiversity, the whole 2nd and 3rd National Ecosystem Survey data for plants, birds, and mammals was used. Environmental variables were consisted of climate, topography, soil, and vegetation structure. Maxent was used to develop species distribution models. Biodiversity hotspots were analyzed by species richness and rarity.
To predict range shifts of flora, 9 species were selected. These 9 species are Korean endemic species, northern plants, and southern plants which are vulnerable to climate change. Environmental variables were consisted of climatic variables. RCP emission scenarios from IPCC were used.
The results of this study were as follows.
Firstly, richness and rarity of entire species showed a little different distribution patterns. Rarity showed more diverse hotspots than richness. Richness was mostly high in mountains, but rarity was high not only in mountains but also in seashores and estuaries.
Secondly, richness and rarity of endangered species showed similar distribution patterns. Richness and rarity was high in Han-river estuary, Nakdong-river estuary, and inland high mountains.
Thirdly, Korean endemic species were mainly affected by precipitation variables. Nothern plants were affected by temperature variables. Southern plants were affected by both precipitation and temperature variables.
Fourthly, each flora species were predicted to shift northern and high area, but they showed different shifts patterns by climatic scenario.
This study will be used as the basis of biodiversity assessment, habitat conservation, long-term national ecological network plan, and selection and management of protected areas. We hope this study can provide information of the potential climatic change and help policy makers develop adaptation strategies.
