Ⅰ. Research Goal
This project aims to utilize natural bio-resources in Tanzania for functional food, cosmetics and drug by the establishment of Korea-Africa Cooperation Research.
The final goal of the project is to build up capacity to produce functional food, cosmetics and drug using Tanzania local bio-resources as well as to improve science and technology in Africa.
The products will be commercialized for the local market in Tanzania. Tanzania is known for its rich biodiversity resources due to its unique location where it has provided the country with fuels, traditional and western medicinal drugs and raw materials for food.
Though, biodiversity is important for the socio-economic development of Tanzania, the full potential of the biodiversity has yet develop. It may be crucial for African development and improvement of health condition to maximize the hidden potential of the bio-resources in order to develop, produce and commercialize products using natural raw materials in Tanzania.
The Duksung Women’s University, which has built up the ability and capacity in the area of research on natural products since 1920, wants to support the aim of the research through sharing of Korean high-end technologies with Tanzanian partners to develop new functional food, drug and cosmetics.
In addition, this will provide a stepping stone for the Africans to be independently sustainable in the long term and contribute to the health and socio-economic development of the continent. East Africa, a region embracing Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, is one of the richest areas on the African continent in terms of its flora and fauna. This natural wealth is, to a very large extent, the product of the region’s enormous diversity of habitat and climate.
Ⅱ. Objectives
The main objective of this project is to establish a research partners in University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Combining the local extraction of bio-resources in Tanzania and the high-end technologies in Korea, both Korea and Tanzania will join in a deeper cooperation to maximize the potential of biodiversity products and commercialize them in the local markets in Africa. The spillover effect will be seen through the growth of science and technology related industries around Africa.
Ⅲ. Research Contents
This project will be a joint effort between South Korea and Tanzania where involved partners are Duksung Women’s University, two Korean companies from the food and pharmaceutical sector, the Ministry of Science, as well as the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The purpose of study is to verify the New Functional Medicinal plants cultivated in Africa in cooperation with Korea and Tanzania research teams.
We are identified bioactive components with anticancer and antibacterial activities from plants cultivated in Tanzania. Through cooperative research between Korea and Tanzania, it is expected the profit on bio-industry profit and scientific development. The research of this study was to investigate the biological potentials of ethanol extracts from medicinal plants, Adansonia digitata, Azadirachta indica, Kigelia africana, Mangifera indica and Moringa oleifera, were grown in East Africa regions. This study was performed to investigate the cytotoxicity in HCT116, HT-29 and A2058 cell lines. It was also performed antibacterial activity against 20 bacterial strains by agar diffusion method. Bioactive compounds were isolated with activity-guided fractionation and isolation method. The chemical structure was determined by spectroscopic methods, mainly NMR and HR-MS analysis. These compounds exhibited significant cytotoxicity and antibacerial activities. The present study was also investigate the molecular mechanisms of phenolic acids isolated from African plans, against HT-29, HCT116 and A2058 cancer cells.
As a results, it is suggested that HCT116 human colon cancer cells are highly sensitive to growth inhibition by Moringa oleifera and Kigekia africana via the activation of apoptosis, as evidenced by activation of MAPK-mediated signaling as well as alteration in Bcl-2 family expression and activation of caspase-9, -3. It suggests that Moringa oleifera and Kigekia africana is a promising candidates for development of nutraceuticals.
Ⅳ. Expectations
The expected benefits of this research project to be carried out will accrue to both Korea and Tanzania, eventually to the rest of Africa, through the establishment of research partners in the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Areas of research include utilizing biodiversity resources that is abundant in Tanzania to develop new functional food, drugs for the local markets. The emphasis of this project includes the transfer of high end technology from Korea, development of human resources, the aptitude of self-sustenance and nurturing of local experts in the science and technology field in Tanzania. The expected outcome is the ability to contribute and improve the health conditions.
