Ⅱ. The Purpose and Necessity
In an effort to overcome energy depletion problems, there have been many ongoing researches over the past few decades for advanced lithium battery technologies. However, current commercialized electrode materials such as lithium cobalt oxides and lithium phosphate oxides have a limit of specific capacity because they are only operated by redox-potential differences of transition metals. In addition, they also suffer from their high toxicity. Therefore, there are limitations to step up to the next generation of lithium battery using the present systems. Development of new kinds of battery which have high energy density and environmentally friendly will effect great impact on technological and economical parts.
To overcome the limitations of present electrode materials, lithium metal or lithium-alloying materials are considered an anode part and air electrode which uses oxygen in atmosphere is considered as a new cathode part. Both electrodes have new mechanisms for lithium storage which is completely different from previous lithium intercalation mechanism. Currently, fundamental research has been reported for this new type of battery system (Lithium/air system) based on the new lithium storage chemistry. Previously, metal/air 'primary' batteries have been partially commercialized but lithium/air 'secondary' battery systems are not still optimized due to severe technical bottlenecks to solve. For the successful commercialization, well-balanced developments of elementary technologies for lithium/air systems including 1) lithium metal anode, 2) solid electrolytes, 3) electrochemical stability of electrode/electrolyte interface, 4) oxide-based catalysts, and 5) air cathode is strongly needed.
In this project, Part 3 group progress the technologies to stabilize air electrode/electrolyte interface of lithium/air batteries. Analysis of air electrode/electrolyte interface is essential part for developing batteries. Especially reaction products on the interface are key part of battery regression. Then it is necessary that regulate generation/removal of reaction products and investigate mechanism of it. So, it is important to retain cyclability of lithium/air batteries by analysis of air electrode/electrolyte interface.
