IV. Result of research development
1. Hyber biomass heavy metal accumulator selecting experiment
After planting 30 angiosperm and 11 Pteridophyta and cultivating them for 7 weeks, effective plants are selected for removal Ar, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc considering heavy metal absorbing ability of ground part and underground part of plants, and migration coefficient of heavy metal absorbed underground part. The design of phytoremediation seems effective as follows: Pteris vittata for Ar, Aster magrms for Cadmium, Angelica dahurica for copper, Athyrium vidalii for lead and Solanum nigrum for zinc. In particular, Artemisia capillaris is proved effective to remove diverse heavy metal such as Ar, cadmium, lead etc.
2. Developing arsen purifying model according to plant density of Pteris multifida
For paddy soil, Peteris multifida absorbs Ar the most(232.48mg·kg-1) in 25x25cm planting interval, but no statistical difference is shown. Pteris multifida absorbs much Ar over 200mg·kg-1 in every sample including paddy soil unsuitable for growing. In particular, heavy metal migration coefficient is TF가 8.41~12.34, demonstrating fast transmission of Ar absorbed underground to the ground. And, it absorbs Ar over 1,300mg·kg-1 in every sample proving Ar hyperaccumulator. No statistical difference by planting interval is shown, but it is proven narrow planting such as 15x15 or 20x20cm is useful to absorb Ar. When the absorb amount is analyzed in a single area, the sample of 20x20cm interval is the most excellent in absorption of Ar.
3. Developing Ar purification model according to Pteris multifida cutting time
When the gross amount of accumulated Ar on the ground during the cultivation in each sample, Pteris multifida that is cultivated by twice cutting in 12 weeks interval has accumulated the largest heavy metal statistically (260.5mg·kg-1). Accordingly, when carrying out Phytoremediation using Pteris multifida on the Ar polluted paddy soil, in case of harvesting the ground part only it is good to cut twice in cultivation, and if the absorbing ability of underground is also considered, it is good to cultivate in cutting once. But, considering that the gross amount of Ar Pteris multifida absorbs from the soil is small and that labor force and cost of cutting during the cultivation, it seems better to select one time cutting. Pteris multifida grown in forest absorbs more Ar than in paddy soil, and the absorbed Ar on the ground part in every sample is over 1,318mg·kg-1 which demonstrates Pteris multifida is hyperaccumulator for forest planting. As to the content of accumulated Ar in the same weight, the plant that is cut after 12 weeks cultivation, and cut again after another 12 weeks cultivation (twice cutting) is proved the most effective, but as to the content of Ar by unit area, the sample with one time cutting has the most effective statistically. Therefore, one time cutting cultivation for the Ar purification of the polluted forest is recommended.
4. Developing heavy metal purification model by rate of mixed planting
In th paddy soil polluted by multiple heavy metals including Ar, Pteris multifida and other indigenous plants are planted in a different rate for 24 weeks. And the absorbed amount of heavy metals by investigating dry weight of ground and underground part of the plants, and heavy metal accumulated amount per unit area. As a result, it would be better to apply different types of plants and rates of indigenous plants planted with Pteris multifida according to polluted heavy metals’ types and concentration.
5. Developing heavy metal purification by a soil conditioner treatment
It examines the suitable soil conditioner types and concentration that effect on the improvement of Ar accumulated amount of Pteris multifida by treating citric acid and sulfur powder per concentration. When citric acid is added in the concentration of 200g·m-2, Pteris multifida accumulated on the ground part is 1,822.2mg·kg-1, which is the largest, and Ar absorbing ability of Pteris multifida increases statistically significantly. It is followed by citric acid of 400g·m-2 and sulfur powder of 30g·m-2 sample that accumulate 1,586.8 and 1,433.6mg·kg-1 demonstrating improvement of Ar absorbing ability
6. Developing suitable treatment of harvested Pteris multifida
After drying Pteris multifida used in this experiment at a drying oven with 60°C for 72 hours, and then incinerating the sample at 700 °C for 2 hours, the change of heavy metal content and fresh-weight and dry weight are investigated between incinerated Pteris multifida and non-incinerated Pteris multifida. The heavy metal of Pteris multifida tends to decrease by incineration in every sample. But, for copper, the content of copper increases on the ground part by incineration, but it is not a statistically significant difference. While copper does not change the contents of heavy metal by incineration, Ar, cadmium, lead and zinc has reduced more than twice, and particularly lead content decreases much.
When incinerating harvested Pteris multifida, the heavy metal is volatilized in the process. Thus, in case of incinerating Pteris multifida, a device to collect and remove volatilized heavy metal must be installed.
7. On-spot experiment of Phytoremediation
Barnyardgrass(Echinochloa spp) is selected as Phytoremediation to Janghang heavy metal polluted paddy soil as freshwater drilling. The plant is planted and cultivated for 5 months by dividing experimental group of multi-function PGPR CH3 developed in the first year and control group.
The growth and fresh weight of PGPR experimental group increase significantly after treatment, and the heavy metal the plants absorb also increases. For As, when treated with PGPR experimental group, the concentration of plants' ground part increases 3.9 times than that of control group, and Ni absorbed amount increases 4.5 times than control group.
As to heavy metal removal amount by unit area, PGPR experimental group is 14.583 mg-As/m² and it increases 7.5 times compared with control group with 1.954 mg-As/m². The plant growing effect by microorganism treatment, and by chelate effect of organic acid that microorganism produces make possible to increase As migration from root to stem.
8. On-spot experiment of barnyardgrass cultivation with freshwater drilling
When barnyardgrass is cultivated using freshwater drilling, the migration of As is more active than in the 1st year as the condition of indepth soil becomes restored. Thus As contents in roots increases much. In PGPR experiment group, the average is 341.86 mg-As/kg-D.W., and in control group it is 526.91 mg-As/kg-D.W. The maximum value of control group is 1481.28 mg-As/kg-D.W. As such high As contents is made possible by depositing Fe-As plaque on the surface of root. Thus, it shows that phytostabilization of As is possible when barnyardgrass is cultivated with freshwater drilling.
9. Barnyardgrass germination percentage and heavy metal toleration increase
To verify the effect of PGPR CH3 on the barnyardgrass germination and early growth, germination percentage experiment in heavy metal polluted soil is carried out, and EC50 value is calculated and compared using TSK model based on the experiment result. As a result, when GH3 is vaccinated, it reduces As, Cu and Ni toxicity to increase EC50 value significantly. Accordingly, Phytoremediation is applied into heavy metal polluted soil, the microorganism developed in this research shall improve the germination and initial growth.
10. Simultaneous application of chemical stabilization and Phytoremediation
When chemical stabilization and Phytoremidiation are simultaneously applied, chemical stabilization keeps to prevent elution of heavy metal. When chemical stabilization is used, it promotes the growth of plants, and achieved double harvest compared with control group where no plant is cultivate.
Though there is a slight difference, in most cases, when planting plants the elution of heavy metal is minimized to achieve heavy metal stabilization.
11. Heavy metal concentration of harvested plants by parts
By analyzing parts of harvested plants such as roots, stem and leaves, heavy metal like Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd is contained much in root. On the other hand, for As, heavy metal is detected in leaves with high concentration.
12. Stabilization efficiency experiment through consecutive extraction
The stabilization efficiency of heavy metal is confirmed by cnsecutive extraction. The result is that the 1st stage extraction shows the best stabilization efficiency by zeolite and magnetite, and the 2nd stage extraction by calcium oxide and magnetite, and the 3rd stage extraction by calcium oxide, and magnetite.
13. Stabilizers
When comparing the growth of plant, absorption of heavy metal and stabilization of soil, stabilizers of calcium, oxide magnetite and 3 zeolites that promote growth of plants, have high absorption percentage of heavy metal, and have a high stabilization of soil, seem to be suitable for Phytoremediation.
