Quaternary stratum covers 13% of Korean peninsula and more than 80% of living/industrial spaces are based on this Quaternary stratum. So far, Quaternary research in Korea has mainly been focused on paleoenvironmental issues such as paleoclimate changes and paleoflood hydrology. In the meanwhile, Quaternary stratigraphy has been give relatively little attention despite its importance as a basic research for sustainable living and development.
In this research project, we propose to create a database of Quaternary stratum over the Yeongsan River basin. This basic research is essential for creating Quaternary geologic maps and for establishing Quaternary stratigraphy over Korean peninsula. Our main objectives are: (1) establishing the marine and terrestrial Quaternary stratigraphy over sub-basins, (2) reconstruction of Quaternary sedimentary processes over sub-basins. Our final goal is (3) to establish the Quaternary database and its thematic geologic map of the entire Yeongsan River basin.
We expect that this research on Quaternary stratigraphy can contribute to both academic research and industry applications. Academically, this research will be able to provide a basic database for Quaternary stratigraphy that is still not well established in Korean peninsula. As for practical implications in industry, this research will be able to provide important information about potential geological hazards, nature aggregate resources, resources for non-metal industry and archaeological excavations.
Specific research subject
(1) Establishing the Quaternary stratigraphy over the Yeongsan River basin
- Interpretation of strata (e.g. age estimation) by analyzing paleontological, geochemical and mineralogical data
- Grouping of strata for the geological mapping of the Yeongsan River basin
- Making strata profiles in the sub-basins of the Yeongsan River.
(2) Creating a geological thematic map over the Yeongsan River basin
- Interpreting the horizontal distribution of Quaternary sediments by a systematic survey of surface geology and drilling data.
- Creating maps illustrating the distributions of Quaternary geology, thickness and sand resources.
- Comparative analysis of stratigraphy and sediment environments between sub-basins
(3) Reconstruction of Quaternary surface evolutions over the Yeongsan River basin
- Understanding the connection between the spatial distribution of archaeological sites and Quaternary surface conditions.
- Understanding the connection between the East Asian paleo-monsoon variability and the regional climate change over Korean peninsula
- Elucidating the Quaternary environments and the origins of Quaternary sediments by performing biological and biochemical analysis
Results
In this section, we list the specific results that we obtained throughout the 3 years research project.
(1) Establishing the Quaternary stratigraphy over the Yeongsan River basin
- We identified the distribution of Quaternary alluvium using the existing 1:25,000 geological map. We found that some information in several locations are incorrect - these informations is corrected.
- We identified several Quaternary sediments that are exposed in the surface and re-interpreted the distributions of colluvium, alluvial fan, fluvial, coastal deposits
- We performed about 250 drillings over the last 3 years based on the information of the existing 150 drilling data, and interpreted the stratigraphy, paleoenvironment of Yeongsan river area.
(2) Creating a geological thematic map over the Yeongsan River basin
- 1:25,000 Saga, Kochang, Panjeong, Yeongkwang, Jangseong, Imgok, Bokheung, Unnam, Damyang, Seokhyun, Songjeong, Gwangju, Changpyeong, Nampyeong, Hwasun, Jangdong, Neungju, Yonggang, Dongga, Boseong, Keumdeok, Pocheon, Hampyeong, Mangun, Naju, Yeongsanpo, Jukseok, Yongheung, Mongtan, Muan, Mokpo, Yongang, Sosan, Dokcheon, Seongjeon
(3) Reconstruction of Quaternary surface environment over the Yeongsan River basin
- Understanding the connection between the spatial distribution of archaeological sites and Quaternary surface conditions: We identified marsh sediments of the Bronze age by examining the strata over the Yeongsan River basin. Specifically, we found several strata showing evidences of artificial sediments associated with human cultivations.
- Identifying the origins of sediments by nuclides. We performed regular monitoring of the sediments over small reservoirs in the Yeongsan River. We found that the majority of the sediments originate from the erosions by the river.
- Utilizing the carbon and sulfur isotopic analyses, we were able to identify if the origin of the sample sediment is from the lake or from the ocean. The sea level variations exhibit a raid increase in the sedimentation during the years of B.C. 8,300 - 8,000 at the downstream of the Yeongsan River. This result suggests that the sediment discharges were much larger during these years because of the increased sea level.
- We found that the tidal forcing can increase the sediment discharge from the downstream to the upstream of the Yeongsan River. So, the actual sea level during the early Holocene could have been lower than what we usually estimate.
- We did a collaboration research with a team from the British Geology Survey (BGS) to create a digital map over the Yeongsan River basin. The BGS team and our team went out to the River together and created a sample digital map.
- Identifying the origin of the intertidal layer at the dawnstream of the Yeongsan River: We found that the upper part of the layer (higher than 11.5m depth) originates from a river or lake, whereas the deeper part of the layer originates from the maine environment. Principal component analysis nicely identifies the border (11.5 m) of this sediment origins. Further analysis indicates that both the upper and lower layers were more strongly weathered than those of Chinese loess. This strong weathering is probably because of the relatively high precipitation rate in Korean peninsula than the arid region of China.
Reconstruction of paleoclimate in a sub-basin of the Yeongsaft River by analyzing diatoms: we found that diatoms gradually increased during the years of BC 8,000-10,000 and peaked around BC 8,000, suggesting that increased precipitation and increased sea level may have led this basin as a 'estuary'-like environment during the early and mid Holocene. Around BC 7,000 diatoms started decreasing because of decreasing sea level and increasing inflow of terrestrial sediments.
