Purpose
This research center took on researching and developing a fashionable smart fashion offering customized service according to the purposes of users through a "differentiation" strategy instead of a "me-too" strategy in the wearable device form whose sales had been limited to ancillary smartphone products.
For the R&D project, the goal was to develop a flexible electronics-based Module System mart fashion platform that would allow users to choose a specialized module for each function according to their purposes, attach and detach it, and reorganize it.
Contents
○ Developing a high value added smart fashion product with reinforced human-friendliness by using a smart fashion platform based on a flexible electronic device-based module.
· Developing a modular smart fashion platform for users to choose and reorganize a model that is flexible according to the purposes and specialized by the functions.
· Developing content about lifestyle, infortainment, and protection by taking into consideration the needs of users.
· Developing core technologies and products needed for individual emotion-centric smart fashion accessories and clothes to provide users with custom service.
○ Building and opening a database based on open hardware, software and design.
· Establishing a participant cloud environment by providing an open platform and building a database.
○ Doing research on start-up activation strategies by creating a new industry related to smart fashion and utilizing the commercial zone of Dongdaemun.
· Holding showcases to reinforce networking with the press and buyers home and abroad and use them as a bridge for commercial success.
· Making a plan to activate linkage to employment and building an independent R&D project model by establishing a custom joint education system to link to the industrial fields through industrial-academic projects.
○ For those three research goals, the first stage covered the followings:
· First, it would develop a source technology for functional flexible devices in a smart fashion module(a flexible device(textile-based device) for a smart fashion module including a flexible TFT, textile sensor, memory, battery, and thermoelectric device).
· Second, it would build an open hardware/software/design system(investigating a platform architecture and developing a system).
· Third, it would develop a smart fashion device with a modular smart fashion platform.
· Fourth, it would establish an open database-based online platform(designing an architecture and developing a technology to establish an open hardware/software/design server).
· Finally, it would work on a interdisciplinary fusion research around five research scopes of business marketing strategies(consumer-oriented marketing and infrastructure strategies in smart fashion).
Development results
○ The R&D achievements of the first stage include the followings:
First, the first stage produced 28 papers in SCI journals, 13 papers in non-SCI journal, Of them, 5 were published in top 10% of JCR journals and succeeded in the development of source technologies and devices(accessories and clothes) applicable to modular smart fashion.
○ Second, it designed core patents and preoccupied patents including four patent applications and one patent registration overseas and 138 patent applications and 67 patent registrations in the nation.
○ Third, it facilitated the growth of companies related to smart fashion through total eight transfer cases of integrated source technology.
○ Fourth, it held Interactive Smart Fashion Showcase in 2015 and 2016 to introduce a variety of modular smart fashion products based on its own technological prowess, was covered by various media, and established a strategy for business models with the press, buyers, and concerned companies home and abroad.
○ Fifth, it pushed commercialization forward by establishing Tech-to-Wear and Open Design Co., Ltd.
○ Sixth, it produced 28 researchers with a master's degree and six with a doctor's degree. Of them, two are working at the center as full-time researchers after graduation. It made 100 paper presentations at conferences home and abroad, won 15 awards for excellent papers, and won seven medals in a fusion contest.
○ In addition, it presented various research achievements at a special symposium on modular smart fashion platforms held by Materials Research Society of Korea in 2016. Its research findings and achievements were covered in "Expedition for AI and Future Occupations-Dream Juniors" on MBC and posted on CareerNet and the homage of Ministry of Education.
They are used as audio-visual materials for career education in middle and high schools around the nation.
Expected Contribution
○ It plans to build commercialization strategies and business models on an ongoing basis through its start-ups, Tech-to-Wear and Open Design Co., Ltd. and promote the creation of new industries and the spread of commercialization with regard to smart fashion by founding a spin-off company in the next stage.
○ Expected effects in the technological aspects:
· Building a global competitive edge and occupying the global markets in advance through standardization and patents to beat the smart fashion source technologies home and abroad in the competition.
· Establishing the competitiveness of products through differentiation from the old products including smartphones and wearable devices.
○ Expected effects in the industrial aspects:
· It will have effects the entire value chain in the industry including production and marketing methods as well as the types and diversity of products and seek after new ecosystem changes toward more favorable industries for single-person start-ups with quick reaction abilities, start-up companies, and small- and medium-sized companies.
· It will create a new trend and establish a new consumption market with a competitive edge by developing human-friendly fashionology products.
· Smart fashion has a whole range of applicable industries including fabrics and fashion, healthcare and health, medicine, sports, leisure, manufacturing and product, education, insurance, broadcasting, home appliances, national defense, games and entertainment, and public safety.
· It will expand the employment by creating new areas of employment and increase the employment rates of graduates from graduate schools, thus providing custom talents to new industries.
