Purpose & Contents
The aim of this research is to establish ‘Complex Research Center for Materials & Components of Railway systems’ and develop ‘the core technologies for components and machinery of railway systems’. The fundamental technology level for railway components and machinery would get to the globally advanced level through this research center. In addition, the excellent researcher will be highly educated through this research center and they will be worked in the railway industry, and the cooperation between our research center and railway industry would become more familiar through this research. The following aims will be performed through this research center.
- The ‘Complex Research Center for Materials & Components of Railway’ is established as four research laboratories like Material․ mechanics Lab., Mechatronics Lab., Electric․electronics Lab. and Policy development & planning Lab. where about 10 professors and more than 10 students are involved. The research center is controled under the Graduate school for railway of Seoultech.
- Our research center will educate and train about 10 graduate students for railway industry.
- Our research center establishes the network for cooperation with the railway industry and research center and policies for improvement of railway industry will be provided to Ministry of Land and Transportation, and the fundamental and core technology related to the project is developed to the globally advanced level.
- Through the policy development & planning research for railway industry and the research center, the future strategies for railway industry are derived and recommended to Government.
- Establishment and operation of ‘Complex Research Center for Materials & Components of Railway’
∙ The research center is consisted of as 10 professional, over 10 researcher, 3 Labes. such as Material․mechanics Lab., Mechatronics Lab., Electric․electronics Lab. and Policy development & planning Lab. It is under control of under the Graduate school for railway of Seoultech.
∙ Research test equipments : Lab. size(50m2), Material․mechanics Lab.(19 types), Mechatronics Lab.(9 types), Electric․electronics Lab.(20 types)
∙ Research center is growed by 30% annually as the results of additional research performance, education for MA/Phd students, publication of research results.
∙ For railway industry, Research Lab. and equipments are opened, Advanced technologies are educated. and professors related to research center perform consultant.
∙ DB for information and experts related to materials & components of railway systems was built.
- Training students for railway R&D experts.
∙ Production of about 10 graduate students majoring in railway technology and experiencing research projects on railway components and machinery
∙ Published research papers : 0.5 paper/a student, attended conference
: one paper/a student. enterprise program for work ∙ experience of students was implemented and over 50% of educated students were employed the enterprises related to railway industry.
∙ The students attended the classes which was lectured by English and the seminars hold in overseas and they published one paper per a student.
- The fundamental and core technology involved in this project is developed to the globally advanced level.
∙「Analysis and reduction technology of coupler cushion characteristics influencing impact power when a train brakes」
∙「Temperature durability analysis and evaluation technique of thermally damaged rubber specimens」
∙「Analysis and evaluation technique of the environmental endurance of bearing」
∙「Development of the AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor and diagnosis technology for prognosis detection of railway system failure」
∙「Research for the source technology of solid state circuit breaker and the reliability enhancement of power conversion system」
- The policy development & planning research on railway industry and the research center for the future government strategies for railway industry
∙ Derivation of guideline for standardized operation and management of research achievements
∙ Evaluation of achievements of the research centers and derivation of developmental strategies and the related action programs
∙ Publishing the annual report on investigating, analyzing and evaluating technology developments and the achievements of the research centers, and suggesting the future plans and the developmental strategies for railway industry
Results
- Through four years of research, the following result can be achieved. 6 papers for domestic publication, 4 papers for oversea publication, 10 papers for international conference, 6 applications for patent, 1 registration of patent, 15 students for student education and training.

- Through this research, the domestic railway technology, which is very weak, will become stronger and having abilities for global technological competition, and several global hidden champions of railway industry would be well fostered.
- Through the education courses for the railway researchers involved in this project, the highly educated students, who play great roles for the global hidden champions of railway industry, will be supplied.
These students educated through this research can well perform creative researches for railway technology and technological businesses for global marketings.
- The domestic small and medium size companies jointed with our research center can use research equipment and facilities belonging to the center. In addition, the fundamental and core technologies necessary for designing railway components and machinery can be developed under the cooperation between the research center and the concerning company.
By sharing the research infrastructure belonging to the research, the companies developing a new product can easily go into research projects.
- Finally, by investigating, analyzing and evaluating the achievements done by our research center, we will derive very prosperous research items related to railway components and machinery, and establish the future R&D policy and the action programs supporting the railway industry.
