□ Purpose & Contents
The purpose of this research is to lay the groundwork for systematic conservation management, the promotion of public awareness, the establishment of relevant policies of the forest relict trees, which has a high existing and potential value of preservation, in terms of the integrity, diversity and history of forest ecosystems in Korea. The main contents are as follows.
○ Identification of actual condition and development of value evaluation guidelines for the forest relict trees
- Establishment of concept definition, investigation and evaluation criteria
- Identification of actual condition, establishment of related information DB and comprehensive evaluation of conservation value
- Establishment of a web page for public awareness promotion, making forest culture content of related information, and related policy proposal
○ A model development for in situ conservation of the forest relict trees
- Identification of the structure and dynamics of the growing stands and establishment of a long-term monitoring base
- Provide guidelines for in situ conservation management
○ A model development for ex situ conservation of the forest relict trees
- Collection and multiplication of Propagules and identification of their genetic diversity characteristics
- Presenting ex situ conservation management guidelines and exhibition garden model
□ Results
○ Identification of actual condition and development of value evaluation guidelines for the forest relict trees
- The concept of the forest relict trees in Korea was defined, and the investigation and evaluation guidelines were established.
- A total of 308 individuals(73 species) of forest relict trees were found in 57 mountainous areas nationwide and the characteristics of their growth and site condition were identified. Their spatial distribution was also drawn up, an Excel-DB and Geo-DB were established, and their growth size was evaluated in total.
- The conservation value of the forest relict trees was evaluated based on their ecological functions and distribution patterns, biomass, carbon absorption capacity, and structural maturity of the growth stands. As a result, it was found that the forest relict trees had 13 times higher levels of carbon absorption than the normal size tree and the structural maturity of the growth stands was also relatively high.
- Planned, designed and constructed a web page to promote public awareness of the conservation value and importance of the forest relict trees. In addition, the direction of forest culture contents development and conservation management policy using related information were proposed.
○ A model development for in situ conservation of the forest relict trees
- Diameter measurement was conducted on the growth stand of 127 forest relict trees to grasp their dynamics, and vertical cross-sections and crown projections were also drawn. In addition, a permanent quadrat with a size of 400㎡ was installed on the growth stands of 60 forest relict trees to establish a long-term monitoring base for the sustainable management of the species.
- In situ conservation management plans and guidelines for the forest relict trees were proposed.
○ A model development for ex situ conservation of the forest relict trees
- A total of 93 seedlings(18 species) were collected for the in situ and ex situ conservation of the forest relict trees, and are now growing in a greenhouse in the National Arboretum.
- The genetic diversity characteristics of 174 forest relict trees were analyzed using DNA extraction and I-SSR(or SSR) markers, and the genetic structure between the seed trees and saplings within their growing stands was identified.
- The ex situ conservation strategies of the forest relict trees was proposed in six categories: ‘planning concept’, ‘Implementation system’, ‘Identification of basic information of the forest relict trees’, ‘Determination of conservation and establishment of its purpose’, ‘Creation of implementation’, and ‘Conservation implementation’.
- A practical model for ex situ conservation system of the forest relict trees were presented and proposed ‘exhibition garden model ' as its realization space.
□ Expected Contribution
The results of this research have the following potential applications in three major aspects, such as the investigation and assessment techniques of forest relict trees, the value of collected information, and in situ and ex situ conservation techniques in Korea.
- Utilization as a standardized guideline for the investigation and evaluation of the forest relict trees in Korea and its national cataloging
- Establishment of the basis for establishing policies for systematic conservation management of the forest relict trees in Korea and application to the development of related technologies
- Operating open archives and building national registration system of the forest relict trees with participation of citizens
- Establishment and operation of Virtual Big Tree Arboretum including the forest relict trees
- Establishing national long-term monitoring system for in situ conservation of the forest relict trees
- Development of various exhibition garden models for ex situ conservation and multiplication of the forest relict trees
- Utilization of the foundation for the establishment of the integrated management of large and old trees scattered in Korea and the so-called "Integrated national management system" to preserve their genetic diversity
- Differentiated forest culture contents of the forest relict trees and the creation of social enterprises to specifically conserve and manage them
- Application to the development of optimal management system for the substantiality of the forest relict trees and the structural diversity of their growth stands
