● Development of large-area transparent electrode via metal network formation
In this study, we have secured the technology to transfer silver nanowires into water and transfer them to a desired substrate by using vaporized hydrazine as a reducing agent. The transfer process was improved to enable dry transfer using Teflon so that it could be used as an upper transparent electrode, and a precise pattern could be made in the transfer process by using the printed toner. In order to eliminate the contact resistance between the silver nanowires, a nano network was formed with a single Ag thin film, which showed a better transmittance-resistance curve than that of the silver nanowire and showed a sheet resistance of 9 ohm/sq and a transmittance of 95.8%. In addition, the haze characteristic was also improved by 1% of haze, which is higher than 9% of silver nanowire based on 15 ohm/sq.
● Large area organic thin film formation and high efficient device fabrication
In this study, we have developed a "spontaneous spareading process" that can obtain uniform thin films by spreading organic solution on liquid surface with high surface energy such as water, based on “Marangoni phenomenon.” In order to prove that it can be applied industrially, experiments were conducted to form an organic thin film having a size over 1 m. The organic thin film thus formed was easily transferred to a 50 cm long Teflon film. It was confirmed that the thin film thus formed was easily transferred into a 30 cm x 50 cm long Teflon film and transferred to the PDMS substrate by a dry method. In addition, we have compared the efficiency and stability of the solar cell fabricated by the instant diffusion process with the existing methods. The spin coating device showed efficiency of x.xx% and the instant diffusion process solar cell showed efficiency of x.xx%. As a result of air exposure for stability test, the spin coating and the instant diffusion process showed a 20% decrease in performance compared to the initial stage. It is confirmed that the process has air stability similar to the conventional process.
● Development of optimized terpolymer system for OPV by using multi-color conjugated polymer
A new series of n-type D–A terpolymers (P(NDI2HD-T-S)) was synthesized from an electron-deficient naphthalene diimide(NDI)-based unit in conjugation with two electron-rich thiophene (T) and selenophene (S) units, and their performances as electron acceptors in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) were compared. The crystallinity of the P(NDI2HD-T-S) terpolymers can be systematically controlled by tuning the T/S molar ratios (T/S = 100/0, 80/20, 50/50, 20/80 and 0/100) in the polymer backbone. An increase in the Scontent induced a significant enhancement in the crystallinity of the terpolymers. Therefore, the incorporation of more S units enhanced the structural ordering of the terpolymers and the electron mobility in the all-PSCs. The power conversion efficiency of the all-PSCs based on a P(NDI2HD-T-S) terpolymer acceptor and a PTB7 polymer donor increased from 2.50 to 3.60% as the S content increased, which was primarily due to the enhanced short-circuit current. To understand the effects of the T/S compositions on the photovoltaic performances, we investigated their influence on the optical, electrical and structural properties of the n-type D–A terpolymers.
■ Development of the donor-acceptor random and alternating copolymer for polymer solar cells by using multi-color conjugated polymer
The backbone composition of conjugated copolymers is of great importance in determining the conjugated structure and intermolecular assembly and in manipulating their optical, electrochemical, and electronic properties. However, limited attention has been directed at controlling the backbone composition of donor−acceptor (D−A) type low bandgap polymers. Herein, we developed a series of D−A random copolymers (P(BDTT-r-DPP)) composed of different compositions of electron-rich (D) thienyl-substituted benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDTT) and electron-deficient (A) pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (DPP). The optical and electrical properties of D−A random copolymers could be controlled by tuning the ratios of BDTT to DPP (4:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4) in the polymer backbone; an increase in BDTT resulted in increased absorption in the range of 400−600 nm and a lower-lying highest occupied molecular orbital energy level, while a higher proportion of DPP induced stronger absorption in the range of 700−900 nm. The P(BDTT-r-DPP) copolymer with a D:A ratio of 2:1 produced the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.63% in the polymer solar cells (PSCs), which outperformed the D−A alternating copolymer, P(BDTT-alt-DPP) (1:1)-based PSCs (PCE = 5.03%), because of the improved light absorption and open-circuit voltage. Thus, we highlight the importance of developing random copolymers with controlled D:A compositions for optimizing their optoelectronic properties and performances of PSCs.
■ Development of side-chain fluorination for OPV by using multi-color conjugated polymer
We demonstrated the importance of side-chain fluorination for producing highly efficient all-PSCs using a novel series of p-type polymers (P1, P2, and P3) containing different numbers of fluorine atoms. The fluorination on the side chain of p-type polymers effectively reduced the HOMO energy level without changing the bandgap and improved the light absorption capability and electrical properties, resulting in high VOC and JSC values in the all-PSCs. In addition, the stronger ‘face-on’ orientation, tighter π–π packing, and the optimal blend morphology with a well-developed intermixing of phases in the P2-based all-PSCs dramatically enhanced their charge mobility and transfer properties. As a consequence, the P2-based all-PSCs yielded the highest PCE of 7.13%. Importantly, control-ling the degree of side-chain fluorination in the polymers is crucial for optimizing the performances of the all-PSCs. The PCEs varied significantly, i.e., 2.93%, 5.21%, and 7.13% for P1, P3, and P2, respectively, and these differences were well evidenced in the changes of the optical and electrical properties of the all-PSCs.
■ Development of high performance all-PSCs by using green solvent-soluble active materials
The control of the bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) morphology in polymer/polymer blends remains a critical hurdle for optimizing all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). The relationship between donor/acceptor phase separation, domain size, and the resulting photovoltaic characteristics of PDFQx3T and P(NDI2OD-T2)-based all-PSCs was investigated. We varied the film-processing solvents (chloroform, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, and p-xylene), thereby manipulating the phase separation of all-polymer blends with the domain size in the range of 30−300 nm. The different volatility and solubility of the solvents strongly influenced the aggregation of the polymers and the BHJ morphology of polymer blends. Domain sizes of all-polymer blends were closely correlated with the short-circuit current density (JSC) of the devices, while the open-circuit voltage (0.80 V) and fill factor (0.60) were unaffected. All-PSCs with the smallest domain size of ~30 nm in the active layer (using chloroform), which is commensurate with the domain size of highly efficient polymer/fullerene solar cells, had the highest JSC and power conversion efficiency of 5.11% due to large interfacial areas and efficient exciton separation. Our results suggest that the BHJ morphology was not fully optimized for most of the previous high-performance all-PSC systems, and their photovoltaic performance can be further improved by fine-engineering the film morphology, i.e., domain size, domain purity, and polymer packing structure.
■ Development of side chain engineering for environment friendly conjugated polymer
Materials processing is a crucial issue in the fabrication of efficient OPVs. Commonly, halogenated solvents are used to process active layer, which impose high level of environmental and health risks. For that, we tried to develop new conjugated polymer via side chain modification. We investigate the photovoltaic properties and charge dynamics of all polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) based on poly[(N,N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis-(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)] (P-(NDI2OD-T2)) and its fluorinated analogue, poly[(N,N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-5,5′-(3,3′-difluoro-2,2′-bithiophene)] (P-(NDI2OD-T2F)), as the acceptor polymer and poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]-dithiophene-alt-5-octyl-4H-thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6(5H)-dione] (PBDTTTPD) as the donor polymer. The PBDTTTPD:P(NDI2OD-T2)-based device has a high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.03 V but suffers from low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.02% with a short-circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of 4.45 mA cm-2 and 0.44,respectively. In a stark contrast, the PCE of PBDTTTPD:P(NDI2OD-T2F)-based PSC dramatically increases to 6.09% (VOC =1.00 V, JSC = 11.68 mA cm-2, and FF = 0.52). These results are attributed to the fluorination, which removes the energetic barrier for hole transfer and promotes the formation of the donor/acceptor blend morphology with suppressed phase separation and enhanced intermixed phases.
■ Development of highly efficient heat-blocking film-type semitransparent solar cells and modules
Until now, reports showing the semitransparent solar cells with efficiency over 10% have been scarce. In addition, high-temperature process makes it challenging to realize flexible film-type solar cells. Therefore, research goal for this year aims at demonstrating “film-type” semitransparent solar cell architecture using low temperature process.
Our research focuses on developing highly efficient semi-transparent film-type solar cells based on either organic or organic/inorganic hybrid materials using buffer layers with low temperature process and dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD) as top electrode. Once the efficient semitransparent solar cell is realized, this technology will further be extended to develop semitransparent solar cell module. We succeeded in realizing efficient flexible perovskite solar cells that exhibited power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 13.3% by adopting C60 evaporated on PEIE-coated ITO as an electron transporting layer (ETL) with low temperature process. We then combined the technology with DMD top electrodes that served as damage-free top electrodes, demonstrating efficient semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-psSC) that exhibited PCE as high as 10.5% on glass and 8.1% on plastics with average visible-light transmittance (AVT) of approximately 17%.
■ Development of stamping transfer technique for fabrication of large-area semitransparent electrode
Spin coating, doctor blading and thermal evaporations have been commonly used for fabrication of solar cell. However, spin coating and doctor blading have limits in fabrication of large-area thin film. Thermal evaporation is not an economical process due to high vacuum process. So we need to develop alternating process which can be applied to large area fabrication and available to easy fabrication of thin film at a low cost. Stamping transfer attract attention as alternating process for large area semi-transparent solar cell. Because stamping transfer can pile between similar materials without any effect from geometry characteristics such as curvature, shape. In this research we develop transfer technique for large area semitransparent electrode / interlayer via stamping transfer based on poly polyurethane acrylate (PUA) stamp. Large area PFPE-PUA stamp which has hydrophobic surface can be fabricated by simple method. Additionally, we introduced polystyrene (PS) nano particle to PEDOT:PSS interlayer for improved mechanical flexibility. Particularly, hydrophobic surface of PEDOT:PSS interlayer modified by introduced PS NP has synergistic effect with transfer of polymer active layer which is target of further research. We evaluated transfer effect of transparent electrode and interlayer by fabricating 2.5 cm x 2.5cm flexible solar cell. Transferred flexible solar cell exhibited PCE of 6.04 %, while reference which fabricated by conventional spin coating showed PCE of 6.95%. Furthermore, through bending test of flexible solar cell, we investigated improved mechanical stability induced by PS NP. Through the optimization of transfer process, finally we develop large area transfer technique for 10cm × 10cm scale transparent electrode/interlayer which has transmittance over 80% and sheet resistance under 100 Ω/sq even after 1000 cycles of bending test
