Part 1 PEMFC
Part 2 VRFB

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an eco-friendly energy conversion system which uses only hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an energy storage system (ESS) which can store electrical energy into chemical energy. Due to easy scalability, VRFB is a very promising ESS in substitute for conventional Li-ion batteries. The PEMFC and VRFB have similar mechanism and share many key components, which enables synergistic development of both systems. In case of bipolar plates (BPs), lightweight carbon composite structures can be adopted for both systems. Gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of PEMFC are also similar to carbon felt electrodes of the VRFB. Apart from sharing key components, PEMFC and VRFB can be integrated into one system which enables the storage of the electricity produced by PEMFC in VRFB. In this project, key technologies for the PEMFC and VRFB were developed to secure the next generation energy systems.
Part 1. PEMFC
PEMFCs are composed of bipolar plates, end plates, membrane electrode assemblies, and gas diffusion layers (GDLs). Among these components, the bipolar plates are the main components of PEMFCs because they account for a large part of the volume, cost, and weight. The conventional materials for bipolar plates are graphite and metallic materials because the graphite plates and the metallic BPs have good electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. However, the graphite plates are brittleness and high processing cost and Metallic plates are relatively heavy and require a protective coating owing to their low corrosion resistance.
Recently, thermoplastic or thermosetting composites reinforced with continuous carbon fibers, carbon fabrics, and conductive fillers have attracted attention owing to their advantages of ease of machining, good corrosion resistance, and light weight. In particular, thermoplastic composites can be easily recycled and have excellent corrosion, impact, and damage resistance. However, thermoplastics have been used less often in bipolar plates than other materials because of their extremely high molten viscosity, which makes it difficult to impregnate carbon fiber bundles or carbon fabrics with them. In addition, the poor impregnation leads to inferior mechanical properties and a lower electrical conductivity in the composite materials. These materials are generally loaded with a large amount of conductive fillers such as carbon black, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphene to enhance the electrical conductivity. However, the high filler concentration further increases the molten viscosity of the thermoplastic composites, resulting in poor dispersion of the fillers. In this work, carbon-felt-reinforced thermoplastic composite bipolar plates were made by using the solution impregnation method and the double percolation effect on the electrical conduction to improve the degree of impregnation and electrical conductivity simultaneously.
Part 2. VRFB
The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the most promising energy storage system (ESS) with many advantages such as unlimited power capacity, long lifetime, and non-explosiveness. VRFBs store excess electricity energy at non-peak time and subsequently deliver at peak time to decrease the risk of power outage with these special features. A VRFB system is composed of a stack, two pumps, and two tanks for electrolytes. The carbon felts are generally used to provide electrical paths and function as reactive sites for electrolyte. Many studies have been conducted to apply the carbon felt to the BP because the BP is required high electrical conductivity in the thickness direction, mechanical properties for supporting the structure, and chemical resistance for durability in an acidic environment. The VRFB has a relatively low energy density. Therefore, the loss of the stack must be minimized to increase energy density and efficiency. There are two major losses in the VRFB stack: the loss due to viscous dissipation of the electrolyte through the carbon felt, and the ohmic loss due to the electrical resistance of the stack components. Therefore, in this study, a surface modified carbon composite BP was developed by introducing resin absorption method through polyester fabric to minimize Ohmic loss caused by electric resistance of stack components. In addition, the experiments were conducted to check the feasibility of carbon foam as an electrode material to improve the electrical conductivity. In this case, the market competitiveness will be secured by reducing the cost of raw materials.
