□ Purpose
To alleviate sulfur poisoning and carbon coking problems of high temperature fuel cells running on CO2-neutral ‘alternative’ fuels, durable fuel cell components will be developed to get sulfur tolerance and coking resistance through research cooperation between KIST and ENEA.
□ Purpose
To alleviate sulfur poisoning and carbon coking problems of high temperature fuel cells running on CO2-neutral ‘alternative’ fuels, durable fuel cell components will be developed to get sulfur tolerance and coking resistance through research cooperation between KIST and ENEA. Design and application of new-type perovskite catalysts, improvement of Ni-based catalysts in terms of performance, durability and cost, and round-robin tests of 100W-class fuel cells will be carried out.
□ Contents
To enhance the lifetime and to reduce the cost of high temperature fuel cells operating with ‘alternative’ fuels, this project will be articulated according to the following lines of activity:
- Durability test and improvement of the alternative components for high-temperature fuel cells to enhance both H2S tolerance and coke resistance of fuel cells
- Design of new electrode catalyst materials by using DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculation
- Development of cost-effective processes for electrode fabrication based on Ni-based catalysts
- Round-Robin tests to evaluate noble component materials developed at both KIST and ENEA
□ Developement results
1. By using DFT calculation, transition metal (M) doped Sr1-xYxTi1-yMyO3 (SYT) based catalysts were screened for biogas dry reforming in the presence of H2S. In comparison with conventional catalysts, Ru or Ni doped SYT catalysts were more tolerant to coking under biogas dry reforming condition. A catalyst having both sulfur tolerance and coking resistance has been successfully developed by adjusting metal exsolution conditions. Ru-doped SYT catalysts showed the highest sulfur tolerance and coking resistance.
2. To reduce the cost of high-temperature fuel cells, technology for in-situ fabrication of Ni-Al catalysts has successfully developed by utilizing chemical alloying method. The same technique was applied to develop cost-effective structured catalysts for biogas steam reforming.
3. Round-Robin tests were successfully completed to evaluate fuel cell components developed at KIST and ENEA. A long-term test of 100W-class MCFC stack is underway (now 3,500 hours) to prove the durability of novel components.
□ Expected Contribution
- More durable and cost-effective fuel cell catalysts can be developed using DFT calculation and adjusting metal exsolution conditions in the perovskite catalysts.
- Cost-effective hydrogen generation system can be realized by utilizing in-situ Ni-Al alloying technique and surface activation process developed in this study.
- R&D cooperation network established between KIST and ENEA will be expanded to develop innovative projects for sustainable energy transformation using high-temperature fuel cells.
