Experimental simulation of complex SOL(scrape-off layser) and complex sheath composed of dust-plasma-surface in fusion plasma and analysis of their effect on PFC(plasma-facing-component). Study of formation and charging of metal dusts. Development of dust diagnostics.
• Effect of metal dusts on the global plasma parameters: Measurements of changes in ne, Te → λq (SOL heat flux width)
• Effect of metal dusts on the plasma sheath (change of Φs (sheath potential), plasma flow velocity and change of heat flux to the surface
• Effect of metal dusts on the PFC
• Study of metal dust formation and charging mechanism
• Measurement of dust characteristics such as size, charge, density
□ Results
• DiPS – 2 was developed for study of Dust-Plasma interaction. Also, Type 1 ELM filament was analyzed in KSTAR. Effect of Dust and impurity was analyzed by Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and electric probes.
• Negative ion which was generated by injection of dust was measured by Laser Photo Detachment (LPD). Generation rate of dust was quantified.
• Bremsstrahlung radiation which was influenced by screening effect was studied by semi-classical method.
• Tungsten scattering was studied, and Cross-section of electron capture on dust particle was calculated, and Various effect (Plasma wave, Magnetic field, Collision, electron/ion flow) was studied.
• Papers and conference presentations have been published on dust-plasma-surface interactions. Korea-Japan Dust Workshop was held at Hanyang University by hosting the researchers of NFRI (Korea), Hanyang University, NIFS (Japan) and Thailand along with the collaboration between Hanyang University, University of California at San Diego and University of San Diego.
□ Expected Contribution
• Contribution to long pulse operation of the next generation fusion device such as KSTAR/ITER and DEMO by experimentally studying physics related to minimized dust contamination in core and edge plasma.
• Understanding non-linear plasma science (complex sheath/presheath, complex SOL, dust plasma interaction)and contribution to open up new science fields.
• It is expected to explain the variations of cross-section and transition rate due to the non-thermal plasma effects, which are not possible to understand by conventional Debye screening model used for the ideal or weakly coupled plasmas.
• Encouraging plasma industry fields through localization and professional manpower training about core technology of dust interactions with plasmas and surfaces.
